A few questions

Prescott, AZ

O.K. this will be my first year to ever grow MG. What is the smallest pot size that they will do good in? And do squirrels, moles, and javelina like to feed on MG? I'm so anxious to get them started, but mother nature is not being cooperative. I'm going to direct plant them outside, how deep should the soil be worked? Thanks for any information in advance.

LOL, you have all summer to grow them. Now, me on the other hand, was so anxious to put them in the ground I was fooled by a spurt of 80 degree weather in February. Planted put them in the ground and then waited forever for them to grow. Still waiting actually. Four inches tall and holding. The weather down here has been a tease. Can't answer your critter question but as far as the soil, don't go to too much trouble. Loosen it, plant in full sun and watch them grow. Hopefully the true experts here will give you more advice. Have you checked out the new Southwest Gardening forum? I haven't seen too many from Prescott but there are a few from your zone.

Hi Kim,

I just spotted that forum yesterday. I don't know how I missed it for so long. The weather here has been really crazy. 70 one day and snow the next. We are still freezing at night, so no way can I plant them now. I'm anxious for warmer days and nights.. Thanks for the info..

My daughter goes to Yavaipai College up there so I know what you're going thru with the weather. She called yesterday and said it was snowing. The desert rat that she is I assured her that spring was on its way. She has never experienced the four seasons. Alas, she's coming home this weekend to warm up.

Tami, don't know about squirrels and moles, but have had morning glory seedling mowed down by cottontail rabbits. I prefer the MG's in the ground when possible, but have had success in pots as small as the gallon size.

Tami - I've grown MG to 'full term' in 4" containers, buit generally speaking the larger the container you can work with the better...

Hey Perry - How do you manage those 'trick' photos showing Ipomoea nil flowers and Ipomoea tricolor seedpods(?!)...

Thanks for the information. I forgot about the cottontail. I may just have to screen them somehow until they get off to a good start. I have a small family of squirrel living in my rocks and thats where I want to plant alot of the MG to hide the wall. The reason for the pot question is are ground/soil is terrible, so I thought I would plant some in pots to grow up the scrub oak, light pole, mailbox, anything thats not moving!!!!

Kim, I can see where she would be anxious for spring, This year has been weird. Assure her that not all of our winters are like this, it's generally pretty mild. It's been along time since I have seen a foot of snow all at one time, unless it's on the ski slope. I have seen it snow here as late as May 23, another weird year. Is she taking classes through the summer?

Good eye, Ron. Deep mystery, but it's probably cause the containers got set in an area where Heavenly Blue was already established in the bed. Here's a shot of the other side of the fence.

When soaking seeds in water, is it best to plant them when white tip comes out?
