Now that I've decided the Rose and Lime Glow barberries I'd planned are too invasive to risk spreading to my mountain woods, I would appreciate any suggestions for alternatives that have these criteria:
striking color for many weeks
2 or more contrasting varieties for dramatic impact
Deer"proof"
not invasive
less than 6' tall and wide at maturity
Will be close to mature size in less than 10 years
The plan for these shrubs is to have one brightly colored area along my long drive that will not be subjected to constant pruning by the deer who spend their nights in the drainfield adjoining the drive on the other side. If the shrubs were bird/butterfly attractors that would be a plus. But since I already plant inside the fence (and away from the deer) for habitat, it's not a primary consideration.
Thank you!
Suggestions, please!
Check out the new Rose Creek and Canyon Creek abelias. They are listed as hardy to zone 6.
Those look like real possibilities. And their characteristics include another plus I'd forgotten to mention - drought tolerance. Rose creek's emerging flowers are especially pretty! Now to the Plant Scout to find them!
