This container grown specimen came out of the "starting gate" much to early and most likely need frost and freeze protection. Planted about a month ago and should break bud much later next spring.

I'm afraid so! I had frost and 32 degree F this morning and I'm not in a frost pocket. No damage though.
Last year, we had lots of freeze damage in 3rd week of April with
Abies firma and Picea smithiana sustaining much damage.
