Another reason to hate Lonicera maackii

Last Friday I had occasion to visit some Kentucky Coffee Trees around Lebanon, Ohio with a friend. Here is an example of a Lonicera maackii that rooted into the crotch of one and perhaps caused a major limb to fail.

On a more positive note. Here is an avenue of gymnocladus I visited on Sunday at Dawe's Arboretum.

I'd say it is a symptom rather than a cause - it wouldn't have been growing there, if there hadn't already been a large cavity with decay to provide the rooting space for it

Hi Resin,

I think the Lonicera was definitely an opportunist and invaded rotten wood, but the photos aren't very clear at showing how fat the honeysuckle roots had become. I could see where their swelling might have really levered the wood apart just like a maul.
