I bought some bagged lilies today at one of our hardware stores and I was wondering how close you plant the bulbs. I bought 3pkgs of Black Beauty(contains one bulb per bag) and 3 pkgs of Chianti (2 bulbs per bag). Do you space like you do tulips and plant in a circular pattern? Any advice is much appreciated. Also I have several different lilies in my beds now. Once they break thru the ground can they be moved and if so will they bloom as well or is it better to move them in the fall? Thanks!

Bought some Lilies - questions
How to arrange them is certainly a matter of preference. When I have 3 of something, I plant them in a triangle with 2 in the back. With more than that, it depends on the area that I'm filling ~ in the back of the border I'll make a zig zag line of them. Nothing wrong with circle planting, if that suits your needs. :)
For distance between bulbs, you might want to consult the Plant Files if there are no planting instructions with the bulbs.

Moby,
Thanks for the insight. I like the idea of the zig zag approach. Now I just have to figure out where I will put them in my border.

That's the perennial problem.... working on that one myself!
Moby,
If I can pick your brain again. Do you move your lilies in the fall or the spring? I have some planted in various spots of my yard and I would love to move them to a better location. Can this be done now or should I wait til the fall?
Thanks again you are a great help!
Michelle
Oops, meant to answer that, too.
I've only moved them in the Fall, which is ideal, it but can be done anytime. Take as much soil around the bulb as possible and try not to disturb the roots. They should be fine.
Thanks Moby!
Michelle
You're welcome. :)
I moved an asiatic and an oriental in the middle of last summer (not they the best time I know....) and the asiatic is coming up it looks like a good strong shoot so far. But, yeah, like Moby said fall would be better.
Steve
I move them anytime as long as it isn't too hot. Dig them with so much soil they don't even know they have been moved. This is particularly good for Martagons which HATE repeat HATE being moved.
