new sprouts

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6a)

Two gay butterflies appeared today! Also Monarda, rocky mtn & McKana columbines, Bells of Ireland, balloonflower, love lies bleeding, verbascum, lavender lady, cinderella stocks, Russell's lupine. Some only have one sprout, but it's still exciting. Amazing what a couple of hours of sunshine will do. We've had cold and dreary with too much rain. The clouds just moved in and our next monsoon is close behind.

I did plant out a few achillea and poached eggs today.

Karen,
Congrats on the new sprouts! Isn't it so much fun to check your containers and see the green. We received alot of rain last nite and I could not believe the new sprouts I found today. Malva Zebrina, Dianthus - Spangled Star, Knappi, Siberian Blue, Poppies -Fire'n'Snow, Double Red Peony, White Cloud, Jacob's Ladder and more Sweet William. I had one container of BB that had zero sprouts yesterday and this morning I have atleast 12 new seedlings. Temps are to be cooler this week so I plan to do a few more containers. It will probably be another month before any planting will be done in the garden.

Congratulations to both of you! I always feel like a kid in a candy store every time I find new sprouts! It's my daily wsing hunt! Planted out Lupinus, The Governor this weekend and counted about 75 containers that have sprouted to date.

We're suppose to get the rain tomorrow. Can't wait! We're in a drought situation for most of Maryland, except for the far western panhandle.

We are supposed to have a freeze tomorrow night so I am bagging a few containers. I even have a few sprouts of marigolds and dahlia stargazer? My question is about watering - I need to water but with a freeze coming after these warm days any special instructions?

Karen-- you are so far ahead of me and I'm just across town! You really do have a nicer climate over there! Looks like you'll have a great crop!

I'll be over to swap some of your plants--but I don't know with what! My containers are mostly non-starters, so to speak!

If you are having freeze warnings, you don't need to water. The soil has enough moisture in it to freeze. It's the warm sunny days that dry out the soil. Hope this helps.

Thanks Shirley - I just gave a sprinkle to the ones that were looking dry and then closed them up. I was out at 6 am to see what happened and true to WS form - nothing. I still find it amazing that those little leaves don't freeze.

tabasco: Even though I have planted a million seeds and many are sprouting, I don't know that I'll have much left to trade. My neighbors are eyeing them!

Karen!

Well, I'm in a sulk!

Even with a million plants you can't swap any with me?!! LOL

You are assuming I won't kill them all first!

My landscaper came today and created a new island bed in the middle of my back yard. It's round, I think 12 ft. in diameter. Lots of space to fill now! If this weather would just cooperate that would help a lot
