Lilies Are Blooming Now

Shenandoah Valley, VA(Zone 6b)

A number of my Asiatic Lilies are now blooming: Aphrodite, Lollipop, and Samur. A few dozen were forced in my greenhouse, so I grouped some of them for a photo-op!

Lynn,
Your photo is fantastic! It will be another month or so before my lilies even break the ground but I am anxiously waiting for their show!

Thanks Michelle. I love spring but it takes a while to arrive here, too. Outside, I have some shoots that are poking through the mulch, some that are not visible, and some that are about 5-inches high. The tall shoots are those that are planted on the southern-side of my GH where it's warmer. I am enjoying all of the other bulb-bloomers, though: daffodils, iris species, crocus, snowdrops, etc.

Beautiful Lilies Lynn - Mine are just now starting to come up, so it'll be a while before I see any blooms. It's suppose to be a nice day tomorrow, so I'm planning on getting outside and doing some "spring clean-up". My daffodils are about the only blooms I have right now.
Thanks for sharing your beautiful photo!

Pam.

Is there an interval of time over which I can expect lilies of the same cultivar to break ground? I planted 4 different varieties of five bulbs each from a reputable supplier. Black Beauty has put up 4 shoots from 5 planted. Pink Perfection has sent up 1 from 5 and Regal and African Queen have each put up 2 from 5 planted.

I have seen no signs of digging or even mole tunnels in the area. Is it likely that more will come up a bit later or have I got all that I am going to have up? What is up looks really good and healthy. All were chosen after research for what was suitable to my zone.

I have been growing Grand Cru and Formosa for five years with wonderful results. My soil is a deep sandy loam with additional peatworked in and top dressing of composted manure every spring and fall. I spot feed time release for the really heavy feeders.

any suggestions, reassurance, or commiserations? Any additional advice before my next order from the same supplier gets shipped in mid April?

Hi ya, Pam. Hi Beth. I can sure understand your concerns, Beth. I am not too familiar with Georgia climate or soils but I did see a forum that is specific for Georgia Gardens. I think that I would either post your inquiry there or start a thread here in the Lily Forum to see what others might think.

I have always found similar growth habit with the Lily cultivars and some are much more prolific with larger blooms, etc. Wish I could help more but I'm by no means an expert with Lilies. I just love them and love growing them.

Those are great lilies - well done!

I noticed yesterday that only 1 of the 3 Orienpets I bought in 2005 has popped out of the soil. We're in a very unusual dry spring (4 inch deficit so far), so maybe this is the reason. I only purchased a few of the Orienpets because I just wasn't sure how they'd perform. I'll be watching those.

Awww, Vossner, your Zone 9 puts you soooo far ahead of us for outdoor lilies. And everything else, too!!

nice photo Lynn! All my lilies are in the garden and of course nowhere near blooming *sigh*. It's nice to know they're blooming for someone else though.
