Weigela

McLean, VA(Zone 6b)

I tried looking at the old posts, but I couldn't find the answer to my question, so here goes.

I have seen beautiful pictures of variegated weigala. I love the color of the flowers, as well as the leaves. From my reading it seems that they grow 4 - 6 feet high. Is this the type of bush that can be pruned to grow only 3 - 4 feet? The area that I am considering placing it needs a shorter shrub.

There are some newer varieties of Weigela that are supposed to top out in the 3-4 ft. range. IMHO, a large part of the beauty of a weigela is its habit, which would be ruined by pruning, much like forsythia "pillows" are anathema to me.

Here's an example of why I say that, not that it's a smaller variety. Imagine how different they would look with shorter, non-cascading branches.

Here is a Weiglea breakdown by size, out of Fine Gardening, June 2005:

2-3 feet: Midnight Wine, Minuet, Dark Horse
3-4 feet: Rumba, Gold Rush, Wine and Roses, Java Red
4-6 feet: French Lace (Brigela), Carnaval (Courtalor), Briant Rubidor (Rubidor or Olympiade), White Knight

I was going to go look that up, stressbaby, but hadn't evicted the cat, yet. She thanks you. :)

Your weigela is beautiful Mick. Does it get full sun or do you think it will thrive with just afternoon sun? I may consider using it in a different area. I really like the varigated leaves.

Hi pennefeather,

Check out this website for variegated Weigelia's.

Also, not to stir anything up, but I prune my 'Red Prince' every year and this is what it looks like when in flower (Well it's kind of puckering out). June 1st 2004.

Then just a nice photo.

The 'Red Prince blooms heavy for a few weeks, then the clematis 'Rhapsody' starts blooming heavy while the Weigelia slows down, and then all at once a few blooms are left on the Weigelia and the Lillies and Clematis are at their best.

That's a lovely color blossom on 'Red Prince.' He deserves that name, I think.

Conifers, I love the way you have the lilies and clematis together. Your weigela is beautiful as well.

The nursery website is absolutely fabulous. I had no idea that one nursery specialized in varigated plants. What a great idea!!

I am constantly amazed, and awed at what I learn at Dave's Garden.

Although you live in a warmer zone - here are the sizes of mine from smallest to largest. Wine and Roses, Carnival , Variegated , French Lace , Red Prince , White Knights.
I seem to get some dieback on variegated and could keep it at 3-4' high(not wide) with reduced flowering.

does anyone know about Pink Poppet?

Thanks pennefeather. I call that "bang for the buck!" Just get your variegated and prune it if it isn't a dwarf selection. You're done!
