Let me know if I need to post a better photo of any of these. I would love to try! I just got this new cam yesterday and it's my first digital cam!

Thanks again,

GH, you are doing great with the cam. Can't ID anything....but the pics are good.....keep going.......

The lst one looks a bit like 'Northern Lights' but I am such an amateur. I have always had a fondness for green leaf begonia. My favorite is B.ehinoisepala, cane type to 18", bamboo like leaves and has small white flowers everyday of the year. I will post a pic someday when it grows up and is more presentable. Until then.....

Dale, gossypium stuartianum, ornamental cotton?
Whatever it is, it's lovely.

#1 looks like persian brocade http://absastro.tripod.com/hkey/hpicrhizom_lz/PersianBrocade.jpg
#2 looks like b. richmondensis
#5 looks a little like my Cowardly Lion

and #4 I have but it came with a tag that just said south american spp. (a lot of help!)

sorry I couldn't be of more help. But I think I got two out of five.

Are you familiar with this site http://absastro.tripod.com/hkey/hsubkeys/hclassalpha.htm
it can be helpful with id.

#3 looks like one Butch could id

Powder Springs, GA(Zone 7b)

I agree with Laurie on #1 and #5. Not sure about #2 though.

#4 looks like the one I just bought - 'Bonita Shea'. What does that mean in Spanish, Laurie?

#3 could be about anything right now.

Santa Barbara, CA(Zone 10b)

GH,

I agree on #1 & #5. #2 could be richmondensis. What color are the flowers? #4 is very, very familiar but I can't place it right now. I'll keep thinking. I've had it and killed it, I believe. Maybe one of Kartuz' hybrids.

Here is Cowardly Lion today after frosts, rain, wind & hail. It's dark and rainy out now so I couldn't get a better picture. It gets quite large. And beautiful.

Growhappy,

Where in baltimore do you live? I live in Perry Hall.
Where did you get such a collection of Begonias? I gave a couple. One is the "Angel Wing" begonis (cane type) and the other is a "Beefsteak Begonia" . I like that one! I have grown endless new plants from single leaves. Right noe, I think they are getting old and gnarly. I should just chop off the existing stems and start over.

A couple of years ago it was at it's best. I have about 4 plants in this 14" clay-like pot. Here's a pic of it.

Here's my "Angel Wing". This was cut back to nubs last spring. This pic was taken in July, 2005. It has fully re-grown.

I gave to cut the ends off every year, as they grow tall and lanky in the house every winter. I have had this plant forever! Like--25 some years. Each spring I cut off the tops and root them, starting new pots. Throw away the canes in between, and let Mama regrow. About every 3 years, I uproot it, throw away the old, woody roots, and repot it in fresh soil. That's what i did last year and that is why it grew back so well. I DO lose the flowering, though cutting it back each year. Oh, it gets a few, but not all that much.

Here's mama.........

Here's the cuttings in their own pot. I root them in water first.

Hi Gita!

I live near Sinai Hospital. Nice to meet a fellow Baltimorean. I think I have also seen you post on Garden Web? We gardeners are just all over the place, aren't we? ;)

I got most of my begonias recently from the Maryland Home and Garden Show a few weeks back. They came from Hunter's Greenhouse in Drumore, PA. I bought a few wandering jews and a peperomia from them too. They are usually there every year and have very nice plants. Bug free and healthy. There was another vendor there as well, out of Rhode Island. He sold me a couple of begonias too, though they were not quite as nice as Hunters.

Oh, I also bought several from the Howard P. Rawlings Conservatory here in Baltimore. I got the Bunchii, Richmondensis(sp?), and two other NoIDs from there. I think you might have heard PA Pete talk about his volunteering there. They really do have beautiful plants. I'll place a link in here so you can see some of the pics I took w hen I went there on Friday.

Your Beefsteak and Cane are really pretty. I don't think I have ever seen a beefsteak begonia. It's gorgeous! Those canes are easy and vigorous, aren't they? So forgiving. What color are the cane's flowers?

Here's a link to my webshots page:

I'll include some pics I took at work today. I have so many NoID begonias! This one is one of my favorites because of both the coloring and the pretty pink flowers. I bought it at Watson's in Lutherville. I slum there and at Valley View Farms on the weekend. Carrie Engel always kids me about keeping them in business. LOL

GrowHappy (you MUST have a real name???)

YES! I used to be on GW before I found Daves. I kind of liked it, but there is so much negative stuff on DG about GW! I am now used to DG and have not been on GW for years. I just posted my picture on my home page here--in case you want to see what I look like. I am a senior and divorced and live alone in this fairly big house. Have been here for 36 years!

Have you checked out the "Mid Atlantic Gardening" forum yet? There is a thread trhere for "Happy Hollow" trip. We/they are trying to get a group of people together to go visit this Nursery (and others) as well as go see the Towson Flower Mart. I have several posts there.

I have worked for garden centers and Growers and at "Franks" (41/2 years) and am now at the White Marsh HD--8 years and going. Used to run the Greenhouse there, but have now been in the Phone Center (as an Operator) for almost 3 years. Bad knees, old age, pain and arthritis......now I SIT and I hate it!!!

I have ALWAYS been around plants! I am a big gardener, but do not venture into 'collecting" anything or any one particular addiction. A couple of years ago, I grew my first Brug. Of course, they are SOOOOOO impressive. I now have a bunch of cuttings all rooted and will have to find homes for many of them. I just want to keep one of each. This will be my third year. Want one???

Funny you mention the "Conservatory"! I just applied to be a Volunteer there and I plan to be there (for the first time) this Wednesday. They are getting ready for their Flower Show this Saturday and need a lot of help. I will see what I can do to contribute.....Unfortunately, I have already been scheduled to work on Saturday and will not be able to attend. Booo....Hoooo....At HD, I need 3 weeks notice to get any particular day off. I am part-time, so it is not all that hard.

I also went to the Timmonium H&G Show--on Friday. I did not buy anything as I have too many plants as is--however, I am tired of all the same-old same olds. Over the last few years, i have gotten some unusual plants (to me) through trades. In the process, i have become good "friends" with Karen in CA (Kachinagirl) and Brugie (Shirley) in IA. We have communicated endlessly and I feel very close to them both. I am sure if I ever went their way, they would put me up like an old friend! VERY sure!

I have seeds to share, if you are interested. I do not post this on the "Seed Exchange" Forum as there is this terrible "greed-factor" there. You post something, and everyone wants some of it!

I have:

My double white/purlpe Datura Metel (grows big and blooms profusely the first year from seed), some tall, prennial red and white/pinkish Hibiscus I got from Ddcat (NJ) about 4 years ago, Tall Ageratums (they self-seed profusely to the point I want to spread Preen all over the bed they were in), Black-Eyed Susans (Goldstum)and some "oddball" seeds I collected a few of--just b/c they were there.

I can share cuttings of my "Ric-Rac" cactus and, gladly, my Beefsteak Begonia. Have many sections rooting in water. I also have a few cuttings of "Clear Sky" Passifloras that all survived.

This year, for the first time, i will be enjoying my Red Epis and a white night-blooming Cereus (from Kachinagirl) as well as her miniature, blue irises. Last summer I also bought (for the first time) 2 "Kopper King" Hibiscus. Can't wait to see them blooming! See! I AM branching out! :o))

I have pictures of all these plants. if you are interested in any of them, i will be glad to post them. We do not live that far away from each other. Maybe we could get together sometimes for lunch???

I am very, very close to White Marsh mall.

Gita

PS. It just started thundering and pouring rain! it is 8PM!

Hi Gita! your cane looks just like my b. coccinea! What color does yours bloom? Are the leaves larger than your hand?

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

B-crazii,

I have pretty big work-like hands. When it is growing lushly, many of the leaves are bigger than my hands. Some are about the same size.

The blooms are a deep pink and in big clusters, but as I said in my above post, since I am always cutting it back, it seldom has more than a few clusters on it. If I let it be, as it is now inside (UGH!), I am sure it would bloom more profusely. I cannot imagine how it would look if I did not cut it back! Right now the canes are about 4' tall and bare, except for the ends where the leaves are. Do you think if I let it be, would new leaves re-grow along the stems once I put it outside????

I trully cannot remember WHEN I got the original plant! I have kept it propagated by cuttings forever!

If you look real close, there is a bloom on the lower-right brhind some leaves. Just to get the idea of the color.

Beautiful !

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Well it sure is a beauty who ever she is! My coccinea looks like that, but now quite as serrated on the leaf edges. It get's tall, (about 2.5 feet and it's inside with not nearly enough light.)

I should move it to my green house so it can get better lighting.

thanks for showing it!!

Powder Springs, GA(Zone 7b)

I don't think that it is coccinea which is a medium green with some spotting.

http://absastro.tripod.com/skey/spic_af/coccinea.jpg

It looks very similar to 'Lucerna' except for the jagged edging and looks darker than 'Lucerna'.

Hi Gita!

I sure wish you could come to the plant sale at the Conservatory this weekend. When I went on Friday, Kate told me that there were volunteers downstairs putting price tags on all the plants they will be selling this weekend! I told her that I would be there early to try to get a better selection of stuff! I can't wait! You will enjoy your visit tomorrow. Did you get a chance to see the pics I took on my visit there?

All of my gardening is done in containers, so I will, unfortunately, have to pass on your very generous brug offer. I would be most grateful for a piece of your beefsteak begonia. Is there anything I have that you would like a piece of? Maybe we could meet one Saturday or Sunday? Let's D-mail for the details.:)

I do have a "To Buy" list of plants, though it's getting shorter and shorter with each passing week. That's because I keep buying plants! I have this insatiable desire for plants and more plants! It's insane! Anyway, I have the night blooming cereus(white epi) on the list. Logee's sells it, but that's the only place I've seen to get it online. While I love Logees, their plants are usually very small and pricey. Do you know of any other vendors online who sell this?

I had a Clear Sky Passi last summer and it bloomed beautifully toward the end of the summer. It even fruited!, but they died. It was covered in blooms, too. This year I'd like to try Incense, as well as Clear Sky again. Incense smells really good. I did see one at Watson's last Spring, but passed it up, foolishly. I went back the following weekend and it was gone, gone, gone!

OK, speaking of B. erythrophylla, here is a shot from a year or two ago where I compared two of my erythrophyllas. One grew in the cottage with skylights & windows and the other grew outside where it may have gotten some sun. Can you tell which is which??? :-} It shows what a difference growing conditions make.

Joolz, are your flowers fragrant? If so, what does it smell like? I've read that these are fragrant. What lovely plants you have, said Little Red Riding Hood. LOL

Jooolz,

Is this a pop quiz? Are they both from the same mother plant or is one of them the mother?

I'm going to guess the one with the pink blooms was grown outside.

Here's mine back in early Feb. blooming in the basement. Disappointing blooms but at least it bloomed.

GH,

I got my 2 Passis at my HD last summer. They were both in about 2 gallon pots for $19.95. You never know what HD may get in! Always go and see!

I repotted them both in nice sized pots. The "Clear Sky" grew OK, but nothing spectacular. I guess it just was not that big a climber--or--maybe it needed to be in a bed to do better. I had it on my patio in a big pot. I posted pictures of both on the "Vines and Climbers Forum. I took cuttings of it and I have about 6 in one 8" pot that all survived and are doing well. You are welcone to a couple.

The other one, a "Lady Margaret", I put by my shed and it clinber all over it and up the side of the roof. Lilypons (Pam) in Moose Jaw, Sasquatchuan went nuts and wanted some cuttings. I sent her the first batch, but they all died--long trip! Then, when i was cleaning up my garden in late October, on a whim--I cut off 3 long runners from the LM , wound them up in a circle, boxed them up in a shirt box and mailed them off to Pam the same day. I do hope some of them have survived to make her day! Las I heard a while ago, a bunch were doing OK.

G-H, I checked under your name, but there was no "To Buy" or "Wanted" list. What is on your wish list??? We could continue these lengthy conversations through D-mails. You are welcome to have one of my rooted sections of the "Beefsteak Begonia". They are so easy to grow! I cannot mail them, though. Either come get it, or we could meet up somewhere half way. Do you work? Where?

I am not familiar with any out-of-the-ordinary Nurseries. Always shopped at Franks or HD. or my local roadside stands. Last year, I did go back tot he Grower I used to work for (13 years ago) and bvought all my bedding plants for about 1/2 price of retail. I plan to go there again this Spring.

Tomorrow, I will get to meet some folks at the Conservatory. All thanks to Pete in PA who told me about volunteering there. I have a gut feeling it may be a whole new direction in my life....Thanks, Pete!

I will send you a "Hi" and some pictures on D-Mail.

Gita

Butch - you win! The one with the big pink flowers was grown outside. And I believe they are from the same mother. But I have so many begonias all around the yard and am always propagating, it's hard to say for sure.

GH - I don't think they are fragrant. I'll try to find one of them today and take a sniff.

Here is an old picture of what I think is B. erythrophylla. It doesn't have the curl like erytrophylla helix, and the leaf edges aren't as curly as Bunchii. But it's different. I wonder if I could find it in the garden today??? There are some disadvantages to growing hundreds of begonias inside and outside & in and out of the ground. :-}
