Sciadopitys Verticillata seed questions

Cleveland, OH

I've been away from the forums for a while (hibernating I guess). Anyway, I was out to a new customer's property today to find that they have a cone bearing age Umbrella pine. I clipped a couple of cones, and they appear to have plump fertile seed.

Question 1. The cones were on the tree through the winter, what are the chances the seeds are still viable?. Our winter didn't get below 0 F.(-18C).

Question 2. I've no experience with Sciadopitys Verticillata seed, and certainly never expected to find any locally. Provided the seed is viable what is the best course of action for me to take to achieve germination?

Thanks!

I'd say you're good to go. Give it a whirl!

Here's your document to get you going: http://www.nsl.fs.fed.us/wpsm/Sciadopitys.pdf

Just follow the directions and you'll be fine. The stratification of 100 days might take a bit of time. Got a fridge?

Thanks for the link! It was most helpful. I'm going to prepare the seeds today, Just wish I'd found them in fall so I could have stratified them with all the rest of my specimens!

I wonder if they're already stratified right on the tree?
