Eucalyptus.....

Chickamauga, GA(Zone 7a)

I bought at Lowes last year a little eucalyptus tree....it is the type like you see in floral arrangements and has the blueish tinge to the leaves with that grey film over it.

I would like some more info on it if I could....I didnt realize it would stay green all winter long and it is still getting new growth on it all the time! I know they are fast growers buy wow!! Doubled maybe tripled in size since I got it last summer maybe it was fall?

I love this little tree and just want some more info so I can read up on it some.

Do you know the species (i.e. was it identified on the label)? There are hundreds of Eucalyptus species, dozens of which are seen frequently in cultivation, and they very considerably.

Probably the best reference for cold-hardy Eucalyptus, including the floral Eucs, is http://www.angelfire.com/bc/eucalyptus/

It's probably Eucalyptus gunnii 'Baby Blue' but it can also be others. This page has photos.

I know in our area they can suffer blow-down in high winds if they are not planted in rocky soil for anchor. Most of these Eucs also change leaf when they mature so if you want to keep the juvenile floral leaves you can keep cutting it back (pollarding).

I have read that they are very flammable, so make sure you keep fire away from them. No barbecuing under the ole eucalyptus. LOL

Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

could be a Eucalyptus cinerea http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/51537/index.html - they do sell that in this area.

I have a small eucalyptus in my front yard that is supposed to be a cinerea - so labeled - but I think it is another variety. It has stood up to wind and cold here (Dunwoody, GA) but we've not have a really terrible ice storm for some years. It has been planted about 2 years and is about 5-6' tall now.

The branches are flammable when dry but don't burn well when wet and make a stink. My friend had to trim his Eucs recently as they were getting into the power lines.

If you look through the webpage I recommended, it should list a few species used in floral and their cultural requirements. The other option is Windmill Nursery in Virginia: http://www.australiaplants.com/eucalyptus.htm
