Weeping Larch Tree

I have a weeping larch that I put in just over
a year ago.Unfortunately, it has sent up a
branch just below the graft. I didn't cut it
last fall, hoping it would start weeping.
Now it's about 3/4" in dia. and 48" tall. It
was suggested that I weight it down, but
the needles are quite a bit different than
the weeping larch needles. Can I just cut
it off next to the trunk? Would it be better
to wait till fall? Should I treat the wound
with something? I need help. It's such a nice
little tree, I wouldn't want to lose it. This
is a great website!

If it truely is the rootstock that has sprouted, you need to cut it off as soon as possible. If you don't it, it will eventually take over and the weeping portion may actually die out. You can't take an upright growing tree and force it to weep. So called weeping trees are sports of upright growers and they will naturally weep on their own. Cut the offending branch as close to the base as possible. Make sure you use a sharp saw for a clean cut. There is no need to put anything on the cut, it will heal over naturally.

Thanks Jerseyguy, We've removed the sprout from the base and we have our cute little weeping larch tree back. None the worse for the wear. This is a great website! Thanks Dave!
