Some MG:s flowering / budding indoors.

Gamleby, Sweden(Zone 7a)

Have any of you tried to untangle an MG...............dont! It took me two hours, next time I am going to put a BIG trellis from the getgo. Luckely I only lost a small piece of it. Here is how the "Chocolate" looked before.

I think this one will open tomorrow. Black Velvet.

A lot of buds. The flowerbuds are kind of small but I think its because I didnt replant them in good time, they have starved this winter both regarding nurish and lack of sun. The dbl Picotee also got broken off when it was just a seedling, only leaving 2mm root on it. I carefully potted it up and it has taken the whole winter to get that tine :0))

Janett, enjoyed your photos of the healthy MG's you are growing inside. Congratulations on untangling the vines. Seems like when I try that I end up breaking the vines ! Interesting picture of your MG's at the window thumbing their respective noses at the snow outside.

Gamleby, Sweden(Zone 7a)

I just had to untangle it because the flowers couldnt open or broke because the vine was in the way and all to "thick".

Thats the trick.........turn them around as soon as the flowers open.
Looking at the snow?? :0)) more........ where is that darn sun?

Janett your chocolate looks great !!! You have more patience than I do, I would have broken all the vines... I am anxious to see the double rose picotee, too.. Way to grow girl. I am going to try them indoors next winter. I just wish it would hurry and get warm enough here to plant outside. Love the Moonflower, when did you sow the seed?

Tami

Gamleby, Sweden(Zone 7a)

Just short of 2 weeks ago. I did nick the seed with sandpaper and peroxide 50-50 for a day or so. I did try to germinate it just after I got the seeds from you but that one didnt come up.

Great photos Janett!!!

Chocolate silks are such gorgeous flowers.

I tried untangling one of my yellow morning glory (ipomoea ochracea) vines that had latched onto a 8 foot pony tail palm in my backyard...I gave up! It was really wrapped up in all those leaves - and just way too much work! However, when I need to harvest seeds, I have to drag out the ladder to reach them!!!

ps....snow in the background...poor little plants and critters!!! We see that stuff like once every 50 years out here :o)

Nice Photos Janett...I really like your 'double helix' trellis design...I know what the 'untangling' thing is like...I've done some MG ' rescues' unwinding large vines from off of chain link fences and rewrapping them onto mine...it can take several days to complete some 'jobs',but can be done in a couple of hours sometimes once you've had some practice and get the swing of things...

It looks like your plants are getting plenty of light, that's for sure...very inspirational(!)...

Congratulations, Janett!! You look like you have been indoor MG gardening for years and years, thanks for all the photographs!!!!!!

Janett, I know just what you mean about untangling vines. Last night, I repotted my passion vine, which was in a hanging basket and spiraled and almost braided in there, and now it's climbing up a trellis in a rectangular trough-type planter. It took me an hour to get that thing untangled! But it will be much happier this way, as I'm sure your MG is. You've got some nice ones!

Janett_D - it is interesting that you mention that the relatively dark colored I.purpurea that you have has short lived blooms...goes to show that the genetics of different lines, location and time of year can singly or in combination yield different results...

The flower on midnight opens about 5 in the morning and by 12 mid day its totaly curld up.
The "Chocolate" is a totally different story. It flowers really long for me. The first day (24h) its half opened then its fully open a day and on the third day the flowers look like they have had to little water if you know what I mean. At the end of the third day it starts to curl up. So its a great bloomer.
And Ron you where right the flowers are more even looking now, all the same colour.
This picture is the closest to the colour, minus the reddish and a ittybitty paler looking.

Hey Janett,

Your "Chocolate" is going alittle bit double...looks like one of the stamens has turned into a petal...I'm also wondering if you are in a latitude that is part of the 'Land of the Midnight Sun'...do you have the relatively unusual sunlight and nightime hours similar to what the 'LOTMS' experiences...(?)...I wonder how this might be affecting the behaviour of the plants at all...(?)...

No the midnnight sun is further north in Skandinavia. Todays sunup is 05:54 and sundown is 18:29. The "land of the midnight sun" begins about 800 miles north of me.
Sweden is a very long and "elongated" country, from south to north it is 976.79551 miles.

I love seeing pictures from all over the world daves garden makes me so happy. I love the picture were you can see out the window. Very neat....

Janett,

What kind of wood did you use for the trellis you made? Balsa wood? How did you attach the parts together?

Way to go, Janett! It is amazing to me to see morning glories blooming in the house. Great trellises!!

Joseph. I used thin Bamboo sticks, the ones you find in any gardener store and what we call Najwire. I think you can find it in your hardware stores or gardener store too. comes rolled up on a plastir or wood stick.
Here you have a pic of one spot that is wired together, if you wire it like this it becomes sturdier. I use a ??tool to "wring" it hard and sometimes to hard :0)) so the wire breaks.

Thanks, Janett, that is the perfect way to do it. I appreciate the lesson and will give it a try!

Wow! Janett, stunning Morning glories! Those area amazing for indoor MGs! I still have to refine my indoor growing techniques. You've inspired my to start an indoor MG or two, probably collected seed from last year to see what kind of crosses I've got. I really hope my sayaka comes back with a few true plants.

gotta go get some wet PT's :)

Nice intense pink color in the picotee pinks, Janett! The variegation in the chocolate silk is nice to see too!

Janett,

First time seeing this post. Boy, I didn't know you could grow them like that inside. Very pretty. I also might just have to try this.
