I need advice on evergreen propagation.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Have any of you been sucessful rooting cuttings of Yaupon Holly?
I have tried to root cuttings 4 times with no luck, any hints?
Thanks,
Josephine.

From Dirr: "...difficult to root...successes(?) (sic) range from 0 to about 50%. Nurserymen have reported similar percentages to 100%. Early March cuttings of 'Nana', 'Pendula', 'Schillings' and a heavily pruned plant of the species rooted 30, 20, 30, and 100% respectively, in 9 weeks after 8000ppm IBA quick dip, peat:perlite, mist...possibly the use of KIBA would be beneficial."

No wonder you're having trouble! SB

Hormex #8 meets your needed 8000ppm IBA and when nothing seems to work, grow seedlings and graft as that's why grafting is needed is times such as these.

(4) parts perlite to (1) part peat is an exceptional rooting media.

Mist 4-5 times per day and for the first month I'd bag the cuttings and let the air out once per week and then cover them during the night with clear poly and remove the poly during the day not forgetting to mist.

Lots of luck to you,

Dax

Wow! I heard that it was tough, but I guess it is harder than I thought. I will try the root hormone, the perlite and peat mix, and bagging, since i can't mist them 4-5 times a day.
I might try spouting the seeds also, may be that will be easier.
Thank you very much for your advice,it is very kind if you two.

There are timers that are about $30 on batteries and you can get a fogger nozzle and mount it with ties. Some of the timers can be set for several times during the day. It worked cheaply for me on a regular hose. I used the brass nozzle.

I have found on some cuttings splitting the bottom of the cutting or slightly damaging it helps. Do you have the ability to layer or stool the Yaupon Holly?

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

I cannot do layering because the branches are high on the trunk, so can't bury them in soil. I don't know what you mean by stooling, don't know that technique.
Can you explain?
Josephine.

Rock Island, IL(Zone 5b)

I've never heard of it either. Maybe layering/stooling is the same.

Beautiful, BC(Zone 8b)

stooling, mounding the soil around the stem to cover lower branches so they send out roots. You then clear away the soil and trim away the lower branches with roots on them. How'z about air layering?

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Thank you for the explanation Growin, I can't do stooling because the branches start high, and air layering seems too complicated.
I will try the cuttings in the special soil mix and bagging, and we shall see what hapens.
I thank you all very much for your help. I will report later on how it turns out.
Josephine.

You're welcome. Good luck.
