Formosa Lily seed

Cordele, GA

I owe tremendous apologies to the folks who wanted my seed from the fall. My life went in the proverbial handbasket during the fall and winter when I had to put my mother in a nursing home, had a close relative die, and ended up driving to Atlanta several times to appear in court when three friends decided to sue each other. I have basically been coming in from work and retreating to hide under the bed each day (which is tough since the bed is low and I am quite overweight :) ).

I still have the collected seed and will happily send it out as promised if you will send me a SASE. My mailing address is Beth Cooke, 1502 24th Ave East, Cordele, GA 31015. I don't think I have collected enough of my scattered wits to look people up on the members' listing. Once again I am sorry that I did not keep my promise, please let me do so now.

Beth ~ I can sure relate; my boss' life (so then mine) took a ride in that same handbasket and it's no fun at all!

Hope your life has settled down and stays that way for a long while. :)

Thank you, Debi. I appreciate the kind words.

Hello, i have many L. formasanum seeds, harvested from road side. They are a weed here, but a lovely flower all the same. If you would like some e-mail me an address to zitheriff@yahoo.com.au. I am a new member here at daves, and do like to trade seeds.
And i love these forums..so much info. thanks.

Welcome Bloomoon, your lily season is over isn't it? Well, you'll be able to see lotz of pics real soon and watch as the lily season progresses south to north.I had a L formasanum planted in a protected area last fall, but I don't think it made it. If and when I can ever figure out how to keep one going, you may hear from me. I'm sure there will be others that will also be interested. LOL, a lily that's a weed.

I always love looking at the New Zealand and Australian lily websites. They have bulbs we don't see here and I suppose we have bulbs you don't see either.

Once in awhile I visit another forum that has Australian members and noticed that there seems to be a lot of problems with birds getting into your lilies and ripping them apart. Do you also have that problem where you live? I've never had problems with birds, but we do have rabbits and squirrels that love to eat the bulbs and new shoots.

Once again, welcome, and don't be a stranger. Feel free to join right in. I'm sure we'd all love hear how you grow lilies "down under".

Hi Beaker. and thanks for your friendly welcome.
To be honest, i haven't grown Lilium much, so i don't quite know when the season is!
I take it you mean, they are a Spring/Summer grower, in which case, yes! it's starting to get a bit chilly round here. I am raising some Lilium from seeds i got fom Buggy Crazy,
mainly the Black Jack crosses, as i love those dark red blooms.
They have been coming up o'k, i guess it's out of season for them, but we don't get any frosts round here, so i'll see how it goes.
And certainly, if you'd like some of the seed i mentioned, i'll send you some.
I am a bit wary of offering it, as it is a declared naughty weed down here.
The sight of them blooming en-masse along the untended road verges, is just brilliant!
The Aussie bush, is generally not characterised by large blooms, so it's quite an oddity to see it there. I gathered 6 pods just as they were opening, and gosh..there's hundreds of seeds in them.
I like to visit the US garden sites , and see what you guys grow, many plants i have never seen down here..it makes me envious!
I have read on the forums the animals you folks have to deal with, luckily, i don't have to contend with rabbits, squirrels, rats, deer,or even snails, just the usual pests.
I think i'd really despair if my plants were attacked!
No. i have no birds digging in, they honey eaters round here are very territorial, i doubt they'd give any new comers a chance!
Anyhow thanks again, if you have a particular Aust. native plant you're interested in, let me know, and i'll see if i can harvest some seeds for you.
Looking forward to your great pics and stories. Bye.

Welcome Bloomoon! LOL You'll have to explain 'naughty weed' ?

Nthn. Sydney, Australia(Zone 6a)

Hi Moby, thanks for your welcome. Oh, i should explain..
I believe this very nice lily, has incurred the wrath of authorities.
It is spreading like soft butter, and they wont stand for it!
Local councils issue 'declared noxious weed' lists, and i think, once you are on that list...you're on the run!
Having said that, there appears to be no obvious eradication program going on in my area, they bloom in the hundreds, mainly along road sides, as far as i have seen.
In my opinion, they are beautiful, and i bet most folks would agree.
A listed weed has a torrid time of it all, and really, some are a big problem.
I think one is not supposed to grow such naughty plants, though, i am not informed as to the legalities of it all.
I probably should not distribute this seed, cause, well..it might just cause more havoc!
But, as i become informed, to the horrors you Northern folks have to deal with..
i.e..voracious rabbits, starving rats, determined Deer, moles, beaver, varmits and moose. not to mention how freezing it can get .....
I doubt this plant would survive anywhere north of..Florida!
Gardening in the US.. sounds tough!
You should all come Down Under, to where the sun shines just about every bloody day of the year! We exterminated all the small animals ages ago..so its Gardeners Paradise!
Sure, you wont get Trilliums to bloom, but your Strelitzia will be blooming weeds!
Does Lilium do best in cold climates? I should read up on it..i am a Lily novice, but i'm on the road! Thanks mate. See ya.

Bloomoon, I don't know if your zone 10 equates to our zone 10, but generally lilies are good for zones 3 through 9 in the USA. There's probably exceptions such as the L formasanum. I suggest you ask a local nursery what would be good for your area. Of course, we all try to push the limits here. I'm always trying to get zone 5 plants to grow in my zone 4 location. I have a lot of lilies that are zone 5 that I grow here in a protected area.

Thanks for the explanation ~ I didn't think lilies were that other kind of naughty weed. ;)
