Hi Rj, I'm going to have to look for the Nutri star fertilizer for plumies here in my area. I like your idea of a plumeria bed!

Those are beautiful plumies, MaVieRose!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Yes, I think they deserve their own show case...The only thing I am concerened about is some of the limbs getting snatched- since my best places for them are in front.
The fertilizer works pretty good - and it usually lasts me all summer or season. I still have it left over from last year.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Yes, I don't blame you for being concerned about that. Unfortunately, that does seem to happen with plumies since they root so easily from cuttings. Can you put up a fence to protect them (and you)?

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

If you can't get a fence - get "The Plummie Protectors" Yeah...I know everyone's sick of seeing The Dawgs! LOL

I could- I'll try it without first. While I might be concerned, I won't be held hostage by it.

LOL...I like the dog protectors...

thank you Clare. unfortunately they are unknowns. never less, i enjoyed the fragrance of the bloom last year.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Chantell, those are the best kind of plumie protectors, and we could never, ever get sick of those beautiful faces. Kisses to them from me.

Rj, it just depends upon where you live. In nice neighborhoods, people just take a cutting or two to start in their own gardens. They think, "Oh, he won't mind." In bad neighborhoods, they dig up your entire plant and sell it at the local swap meet. If I were going to plant in my front yard, I would just plant an unnamed white or common yellow and not any of my expensive cultivars.

MaVieRose, I have quite a few unknowns myself, and I enjoy them just as much, if not more, than my named, registered cultivars. Some of my registered cultivars just don't have the fragrance of my unknowns.

Edited to fix spelling error "did" to "dig."

Clare too funny!! The one day I had them (the plants) out front...I was concerned. My neighborhood isn't the ghetto but I don't live in an upscale one either. All I could think of was...nah, they look like sticks now...it's later I'll have to worry. The tribe has already been told - your friends or their friends touch my plants...they will pay! LOL

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Yeah..my neighborhood is like that. kind of inbetween. I have been slowly adding things, not wanting to attract vandal attention . But I guess if the 6 foot metal sculptured flowers and the 3 foot indonesian statue finished off with 2 bamboo ladders with morning glories doesnt attract em by now..I should be safe...
I am disconnected from the net this weekend..see you monday..

A few of my fellow plumies growers have had potted plants snatched from their driveways. One friend was sure the UPS driver took his plumeria that he had just put out on the driveway to soak up some sun. In other places, certain palms are being snatched and/or dug up from front yards. It is unfortunate. On the other hand, one grower lives in an apartment complex and uses her potted plumerias to decorate the exterior. LOL, Rj! I hope your yard will remain free of thieves. Have a good weekend.

I am installing security cams front and rear this summer.
I also practice my right to protect my property.
Most of the nieghborhood knows it.
Last year I was sure someone helped themselves to a rather large cutting of my Double White Brug...
I was soo offended, I felt violated.
This year ill have pics heh...
LOOKOUT THIEVES!!!
MALESTROM HAS AN ITCHY TRIGGER FINGER!!!
THE SIGN WILL SAY SO TOO.... 8^P

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Hey Michael....have you seen the yellow sign you can hang on a fence....it shows the outline of a Rottie or Dobie or Shepard and reads simply: "They/He can make to the fence in 2.8 seconds...can you?" LOL Here's a sample like it: http://cgi.ebay.com/ROTTWEILER-DOG-K-9-2-8-SEC-TO-FENCE-FUNNY-SIGN-SIGNS_W0QQitemZ7228576266QQcategoryZ10852QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Gordon, I looked at the link for the Maxicrop. Which one do you use?

I am trying to remember who recommended which, or had tried which.

Michael, I think you are the one that brought up the GH-3? I have really been interested in trying it. What do you think?

And Clair was right on with the Lava Sand from Spray-n-grow. I got the small sack, I think it was 7 lbs. and I tried it in my fuchsias which I have in the house. Just a pinch and I don't know if I ruined them, they were so wet. Don't know if the Lava Sand was the culprit. I remember rj saying that he had that problem with some plants he had planted and had to take them out and re-pot them.

If I got the wrong people, I am sorry. This was a long thread and I should have taken notes as I went.

Regarding GH-3, I highly reccomend you do a lot of reading first.
I have had some neat results
But the more disasterous would have been the case without the guidance I recieved from a horticulturist.
There are many applications for GA-3,
Specific goals need to be determined first, then application.
Many people arent pateint enough to let the new growth harden.
It give major growth and real fast, however it is very green apt to burn and weak.
All new growth needs staking and sun protection.
Mine is passing the 1 year point and some of my results turned out as desired.
Others are terrible LOL!
Be careful not to breath any in... sheesh!! or swallow any either.
A mask and gloves are reccomended.
I have made an ointment to apply to tips and bases,
I have also made a weak spray to apply to inflos and leaves.
I would say if you have plants that you value, dont use it till you are really familiar with it.
If you have a few commons or undesirable plants then experiment away.
Please read as much as you can first, online or wherever you can.
Do a search on MPG for GA-3, there is a lot there also.
Most of the 'elite' crowd frown upon it.
I have a mind of my own when it comes to the 'verboten'.
I like to know 'why'.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I have been internetless all weekend- until thursday so am catching up at work.

By the amount of plumerias I hauled out of the green house yesterday, I can safely say if a couple get snatched out of the front, I will be just fine. My plans to put them in the ground with the lava sand didn/t quite pan out yet. Its up there on the priority list and will update with pics.
