Does anyone have oleander to share? None of the nurseries near me carry it and it isn't as prolific here as other places. I need enough plants for an area about 30' long between two properties and driveways that will provide a screen, particularly for dust in the summer from the neighboring driveway, but which can be hit by car bumpers occasionally without being killed (or damaging the car), or, if necessary, cut to the ground and still come back. Zone 9b, inland, north Humboldt Co., full sun, limited to no summer water, absurd amounts in the winter. If not this, then what do you suggest? Thank you, Laura
Oleander cuttings/plants/advice, please
Can you have one of your nurseries special order it for you? It's all over the place in the rest of CA so I'm sure one of the nurseries near you could find a source for it and order it for you.
ecrane3-I know - it's everywhere but here! I've asked at the two main nurseries and they wrote my name down, but no promises...! There is one vendor on ebay and I haven't found anyone online who sells it.
Monrovia has a couple oleanders that they sell and pretty much every nursery here carries plants from them so I'm sure there are nurseries near you that order things from them too. I've found it helps sometimes if you can tell your nursery which wholesalers have it, that way all they need to do for you is order it rather than having to take time to do a search. I'm sure there are other wholesalers who have oleanders too--Monrovia isn't always the cheapest one if you're looking for large numbers.
Or if you want to order online, Plant Delights carries them: http://www.plantdelights.com/Catalog/Current/Detail/03786.html
Or if you'd rather do the cheap long term approach and get seeds instead of plants, Top Tropicals has those: http://www.toptropicals.com/cgi-bin/garden_catalog/cat.cgi
There may be others too--I knew I had seen them on Top Tropicals, and I found Plant Delights just by doing a google search for Nerium oleander--some of the links are for info only sites, but I'm sure if you go through the pages of results you'll find some other nurseries with plants for sale too
Thank you - when I searched just oleander I got lots of hits for movies and music. Not one vendor listed had oleander, so I'll change my search criteria. Monrovia is where I got some information. It's a good suggestion to suggest the vendor for the nursery to go through. Very good-thank you!!
Yeah, if you search by it's latin name instead of just oleander you should get more relevant info. Otherwise you end up with White Oleander the movie and other stuff like that, but when you search for Nerium oleander you're pretty much guaranteed they'll almost all be plant links, some places will have them for sale and others will just have information but it definitely gives you less to search through
4paws....is it stealing to stop in the breakdown lane on the freeway and do a little judicious pruning?? *s* Everyone I've talked to says Oleander starts very well from cuttings. Or perhaps you have a neighbor who needs a lil pruning and would let you keep the "waste", if you pruned for them?!
Hehehe...
I'm not sure if it's stealing. No neighbor has oleander here that I'm aware of. I did see some in Willow Creek, however, so maybe in the night....or I'll just ask. It's a commercial place. I found a vendor on ebay with pink, fragrant oleander for a small price, so if my nurseries don't have it this weekend, I'll get it from ebay's plantranch.
Years ago in Santa Cruz, I carried little scissors on my keychain and deadheaded roses that were neglected. Of course, I took a few for my house, too. I didn't consider that stealing, just maintenance. If I didn't do it, there would have been few blooms.
I've asked...and most people are happy to share.
