New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

RedRose.. I bought them at Walmart 4 years ago when they was on sale. .50cents each 3 pack. I got about 8 of them.

Shenandoah Valley, VA(Zone 6b)

Looking good!

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

Well that good on sale real bargain so does it still sell it now?

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

In some store or online store do sell them.. Check with Park's seed.. catalog or online they do sell them.

I can't believe what I just found while walking around the old chicken pen where my chicken got killed by dogs.. anyway.. I thought about the chicken and I walked to the area and looked around and noticed a plant that seems I know of.. I looked closer and thought it must be a tomato plant. I decided to nip a leave and smell it. Oh, it's tomato!!!!!! I looked carefully around and found 4 more.. I remembered, I throw the rotten tomatoe to the chickens.. The plants look so healthy and very green even it have small flower buds too. Boy, I am gonna to have lots of tomatoes this year.. I decided to make small garden there where chickens used to be. It's very fertizler there cuz all grass was soo green along with tomatoes. I will make about 4 rows for tomatoes, peas and lima. :o)

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

How exciting, MiniSchnuz. Glad to see how fine your garden is growing - gives me hope that spring will eventually come our way, too. Should be fun to find out what type of tomatoe the "surprise" tomatoes in the chicken area turn out to be :-)

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

Yes, it will be fun to see what it turn to be.. LOL.. Tomorrow I had to run to Lowe's and buy some stalks for tomatoes! Some squashes and zucchini sprouted! Also the cucumbers seedlings looks healthy and deep green then the first one I sowed. This was 2nd sow I got seeds from local feeder store. For now and on, I am going buy seeds from local feeder!

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

here's my cucumber row! That was the 2nd time I sowed it. The 1st sow.. seeds was bought from package.. from walmart.. They didnt do good. I destroyed the seedlings and bought 2nd seeds from local feed store and sowed again. Wow, they look healthy, deep green than the 1st sow I did.

Here's squash or zucchini.. between the sunflower seedlings. I dont have any mulch so I use pine needles as mulch around squashes.. I have plenty needles around here.. I don't know if it's good for the garden?!?!

Are pine needles good for the garden? That's a question I struggle with. I thought they were all good until someone posted on GW that the terpenes might inhibit growth on some things. Most anecdotal reports are positive for the needles. ....but sometimes the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth is hard to find out.

Augusta, GA(Zone 8a)

Never had any problems mulching with pine straw. Probably have not tried on every known vegetable tho. They can be a bit acidic when decaying, but I have to lime my soil anyway.

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Mini--I use pinestraw mulch with no problems....your garden looks great!

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

I guess , pine needles to use in garden is fine. The last time I used the leaves from neighbor. It was wonderful and gives more moistures in the dirts. Now I had to use pine needles since they burned the pile of leaves.. Next time.. I wll go over there and rake and put in black bag and dump in garden for mulch and keep it moisture. THey have lots of trees.. Here lots of pine trees.

Today, I bought bunch of yellow drawf marigold plants and planted between tomatoes plants also among the egg plants, and the bell peppers. It's pretty to see the garden with yellow flowers.. LOL.. Now, I need to find a way to keep my dogs out of the garden. They don't know how to walk thru the between the rows. Ugh.........

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

Updated: Here's me next to Zucchini plant. It's huge. My first time to grow zucchini. The between zucchini are sunflowers.. :o)

I have 4 zucchini plants plus I just planted ( Z seeds) around Mother plant so I will have some more in the summer! :o) I love Zucchini cake, grill etc... gonna try for fry sliced zucchini... Yummy!

The vegetable garden! I am happy with my garden. They grow well but not the green beans.... I planted and waited... waited for a month. I decided to dig and check the beans.......... very unhappy.. I took bean out and look rotten. I opened.. There was baby catarpillar in it. Look like cutworms. No wonder why many beans did not come up as I checked few beans.. I found same thing. I found the big cutworm. I killed it. Went and bought more fresh snap beans and replanted. Now most of beans sprouted! Yay! Also the okras.. most come up. They re on left side of garden. You can see why most the dirts are show. Also I think there is one birdhouse gourd plant growing in 3rd rows. We didnt planted there. Who ever did it. I am happy! LOL

Now show,, other garden, I planted sweet peas, lima, okras. For lima and peas. I put toilet paper rolls and kitchen towels rolls. I cut one inch and put it around the seedlings to prevent the cutworms!!!!! They are doing good and growing well. NO luck on watermelons, cataloupes. spagetti squashes..

Really impressive, Tricia. You've been hard at work! Glad the beans are working out finally. How are you controlling weeds?

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

>8-) look good garden so glad for you to make you look happy! Nice garden~

Ijamsville, MD(Zone 6b)

Cut off that zuke at any size you want! Don't let them get too big or they will get seedy. Try the beans again and see what happens. Enjoy!

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

Thank you Kim. I am going to cut that off tomorrow! 5 to 7 inch long will be good enough for me.

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

I picked another zucchini this morning! It's 6 to 8 inches long.. The first one I picked.. It was 11 inches long!!!!

Today, I planted seeds under Zucchini plant and others for more crops later in the summer.

Yesterday, bad storm passed with little rain but windy was terrible. It broke the squash plant to the ground, bent the zucchini plant off and glad there is baby new plant sprout from bottom. One of green bean plant snapped off the ground. Others look good and back in shape. The sunflowers are getting tall and tall.

Most of green beans, okras, snap peas sprouted! But one problem I am having right now..... is...... small mammal mole. I think.... I found several like dirts have been tunnels under dirts across the rows.. ... I am not sure how to explain.. it's like they are digging the tunnel under top of ground dirt. Is it vole or what??? Tunnels look like 1 inches wide and 1 inch deep.

very nice garden Mini.
How do you keep that grass out of your garden?
I think I am too lazy to weed all the time.

I am a container gardener. I do put some things out in the ground. Okra. Some tomatoes.
I want to put some cukes on the fence line.
I desperately want to grow melons. I have no tiller. Those things are so expensive. (melons and tillers lol)

Cricket

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

Thank you Cricket...

About weeds... I have been pulling them daily in the early morning and some time in the evening.. Now it's full of weeds in between the rows where you walk thru.

Yesterday, I planted Honey dew seeds after I cut the melon. Yummy. I thought what will I do with those seeds.. so I plant some in garden! LOL I need to take picture of my 2nd veg garden.
