We are going to float away

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6a)

It has rained here almost every day for a week. I just heard on the news that we've had 2 inches already today with up to another inch to come today. 80% chance of the same tomorrow. My jugs were totally water logged. I fashioned a "roof" from plastic sheeting over the big container holding most of my milk jugs and pop bottles. And my husband moved the others (like cake containers and take out containers) onto the covered porch yesterday afternoon to get them out of the rain, Everything is going to drown out there otherwise. My bachelor buttons look like they're rotting.

But others are starting to pop! If the rain ever stops I'll get out there and check more closely. A few hollyhocks are up as well as statice, a lupin, and I think some nigella. I have some icelandic poppies in styrofoam cups where the holes had plugged up and water was floating on top. I poked more holes and the poppies look great now. As for now I'm hibernating in the family room with my coffee.

I heard your neck of the woods had a bad run of tornados yesterday too!!! Everyone ok there?

The tornados were actually west of here- Missouri, Kansas. We had severe TS watches and tornado watches but thankfully we just got 4 to 8 in of rain and thunderstorms and wind. We moved all my WS containers under roof onto the covered front porch. Now we have to get them back to the patio in the back yard to get them back in the sun. I'll have to hold them down with net since we now have winds over 40 mph and the lighter ones might blow away. I haven't checked the individual containers in several days due to weather but hope to do so today. I'm seeing lots of green thru the condensation.

Glad to hear all is well - I thought of all my DG friends that are west of me!!

k-- And I thought Wintersowing was 'seed sowing for dummies' or 'seed sowing for the lazy gardener'! Not!!

Have been moving and fretting and fooling with my seed trays too. I just got back into town last evening after several days and found my pots floating around in rainwater too. Almost cried! Went out in the dark to drain them off.

It sounds like you have much more green showing than I do--probably because yours are in the sun. (Or mine are dead!)

Good luck. t.

It's been pretty effortless - not including the container prep and sowing. Once the container is sown I put them out and I haven't touched them. Of course, I'm constantly checking them, but I do that to my houseplants too. I have sprouts but I guess the true test will be in a couple of weeks to see what else sprouts.

Okay, I need advice quick. When things start sprouting I usually take off the plastic, and things have been doing okay. It's raining here, so I need to know if the rain will hurt them? They're babies. Will I need to cover them back up with plastic after I drain them off? They just came up this past week-end. It's been in the high 70's here and sometimes low 80's.
Thanks for your help. ... Elaine

Hi Elaine - I would just make sure that the water drains off properly. If not, you may want to add some additional drainage holes

If it's just normal rain it's good for them. I only moved mine under roof because it was such heavy, pounding rain for days on end. We had severe thunderstorms, heavy rain, and wind. We had 4 to 8 inches of rain over the weekend alone, and it had rained almost every day of the previous 5 days.

Normal rain is good for your seedlings. If that's what you're getting, don't sweat it.
