What kind of dogwood?

Atmore, AL(Zone 8b)

I found a dogwood growing in my woods but it is not like the typical dogwood. This one has small pale green flowers. I almost wouldn't have noticed the flowers if I hadn't walked up on it. It is growing in full shade. I was going to take a picture but my camera is loaned out right now. Any ideas?

I got my camera back. Here's a picture of it. The flowers look white in the picture but they are really light green.

My guess (and that is all that it is) is just cornus florida. I thought their actual flowers are normally greenish. Maybe cornus nuttallii if not cornus florida. Please wait for real experts to tell ya what it actually is first. I just wanted to get a guess in before someone tells you what it really is.

Not Cornus nuttallii, the bracts are the wrong shape and number (usually 5-6 bracts, less often 4)

Given your location, it is presumably Cornus alabama, rather than Cornus florida ;-)

Most of the pics I saw for Nuttallii had the 5-6 bracts, but I saw a few with 4 that is why I tossed it out there.

Keep watching the tree. Dogwood flower bracts expand slowly, changing from greenish to white as they reach full size. Let us know in about a week what happens.

I will check everyday to see if it changes colors.

My cornus florida have the same blooms, very light yellow/lime-white petals with a green center. Mine are mature trees, and all are in bloom now along with the redbuds interplanted with them. It's great!

I think mine is cornus florida too, but just a wild variety with non-showy flowers. The flowers are only about an inch accross. I seen some in a nursery today that were bright white and about 2-3 inches accross. I think it was called snow queen or something similar.

Just keep watching . . .
