daphne odorata

Richmond, VA

question - can anyone confirm what I have heard that when a winter daphne reaches considerable size it dies? has anyone tried a major whack-back with success or is it just ashort lived shrub? my beloved one which is about 6' x 4' looks really bad this year, foliage yellow, very few blooms

My mom's daphne is doing the same thing. I figure it's just "elderly" and it's time has come. I will yank it on my next visit, then get her some new plants for Mother's Day. It's been my experience that shrubs do have a lifespan, different lengths for different types of plants. Once they get past a certain point, I recommend replacing them because they'll never really look good again.

Bob, at Arrowhead Alpines, says they die because of Phytophora fungus infection, usually arising because of wet roots, poor drainage, etc.; they like sandy, poor soil, and good drainage with relative dryness, and no mulch. Subdue apparently is a treatment, but sounds like prevention is the best treatment. That's all I know about it... mine died.

My Mom has very rocky soil, so her drainage is good. The plants have been there 15 years probably. I think they're just "done". New ones will look so much better. She loves the smell right there at her front door.
