Can anyone tell me whether I can grow Thuya orientalis from seeds that I gathered off my plant? And how do I go about it. I gatherered quite a bunch about a month ago, but haven't gotten around to doing anything with them.
My plant in a tiny pot on my apartment terrace is now full of flowers again, so maybe I'll have many more seeds next winter.
Any advice would be great.
Thanks
Carey
Starting Thuya orientalis seeds
Thuja orientalis , Oriental arborvitae ,zone= 5 , sow 2m @ 39ºF, move to 70ºF for germ.Got this from Tom Clothier's site. Looks like it needs cold treatment and then warm planting in spring when the soil is warm.

Thanks Windy - does 2m mean 2 months? As he puts wks for weeks, I presume this is the code.
I found the link very useful - it's packed with useful information.
Does anyone know how easy the Thuya seeds are to get going. Any special tips for appropriate substrate?
Thanks
Carey
I think it means months. You could store them in the fridge for that length of time if you do
not get a cold season there. I have never started them from seed. I don't have any other information on how long it takes. You could try a google search and see if there are any sites that would offer that information.
thanks I'll give it a try and post the results here!

careyjane: Dirr Propagation book says this is usually stratified 1 1/2 months . To stratify you must moisten sterile peaty mix add seed then place it in sterile bag or jar in refridgerator. The fridge temperature should be between 34 -38 degrees fahrenheit. After this the seed germinates best at around 68 degrees fahrenheit.
Thanks for your help. I'll give it a try and let you know what happens.

What's going to happen is you'll have huge germination results!
I had mine in the fridge for a month and then sowed them in the greenhouse and I have hundreds! My temps were even low being 45 F.
They're very easy.

Sorry to have been so long in replying -- I've been really busy. That's great news if they really are so easy!
