Jeanette, some just have a cascading habit to them. I guess you could put it in a hanging basket and enjoy it. I know Candela does hers like that.
For example here's begonia withlacoochee, (aka 'bridal veil' begonia) from the show. note the first place ribbon.
(p.s. I'm assuming that you are referring to the cane with polka dots)
I have found my true love!!!
Laurie I like using bat guano, worm castings etc.:)) For my Av's too !
I been showing hubby your pictures of plants you've been buying he says WOW !
He was going to make you a special pork roast dinner but I told him you don't eat meat. But the thought is what counts.
Hek with suitcases. Do you think you can get it all in the car ? Don't let them get too hot in the car.
I can't wait to see them all. Maybe I can sneak a few clipping :))
I really want to thank you,Joolz and Butch..I hope y'all have fun and we wanna see more pictures..Darn I was really hoping your hubby would be mad,and tell you to send them ALL to me,no such luck...I like the ones that hang too they take up less room....I don't know where you find the room for all them plus your AV's.. ;o)))
Loretta...
Hey Allison sneak me some too.. :o))
Loretta...
I have no idea where I'll put them. Going to have to rearrange my office, bedroom, kitchen and greenhouse to make room.
Looks like my spider plants are going to have to fend for them selves outside of the greenhouse to make more room. silly me I even have rosemary in my greenhouse. It doesn't even freeze! Out it goes as soon as I get home!
Yea Ali, I'm trying to figure out how many trips to the car I'll have to make. When I get to the gardens in the a.m., I'm looking for a shady spot, will crack the windows etc. Have the tops covered with newspaper and so on.
check your email.
give your DH a big kiss for the thought! you all dont need to fuss over me one bit. I'll be eating on the road or whatever. PLEASE dont even think of going out of your way! I wont hear of it!
(sorry to get O/T other begoniacrazy! (grin)
Hey, I am just happy for you to share all of this with us. Are Butch and Joolz taking home as many begonia's as you are? WOW, you guys really did shop till you dropped!!! You must have a wonderful husband! Mine would probably divorce me if I came home with that many plants! I think he is jealous of me and my small collection of about 15 begonia's now(just kidding). He says you love those plants more than you love me. If you hotel room looks like that, I can only imagine what your home looks like. You did great!!! Thanks for the tips!! Have a safe trip home, I can't wait to see the rest of your photos!! Talk to you soon! ~Kristi
That is lovely isn't it. My leaves are that shape but spotted. Guess I will just let her go. LOL
Thanks, Jeanette
Lali, LOL!!!! I knew you would think you'd 'died and gone to heaven' when you got PHOE :)))) Just sitting here with a big grin looking at your purchases and thinking to myself, you are going to have to change your name to BEGONIAINSANE!!! :) Next time forget renting a car - rent a truck!!! Glad to hear you're having a great time, even if I am just a little bit jealous. Looks like Tim got everything in tip-top shape for the convention. When we were there in November the greenhouses were in a bit of a shambles from the hurricane that hit the area the month before, but looks like everything is back to normal now. Can't wait to see more of the pictures!
Debbie
Lali, I absolutely agree with Debbie!! Your not just begoniacrazii, you are begoniainsane!!!! I will admit, Debbie you are not the only one I bit jealous, I am as well, In a good way!! Now I know, I must go to atleast one convention. Even if it is the only one I ever get to go to!! You guys have infected us all (grin). This might be a dumb question but I am very new to the world of begonia's. What does PHOE mean? Also; who is Tim? Just wondering!! More pics please when you can!! Thanks! ~ Kristi
Would it be Tim Anderson? I have a Tim Anderson hybrid?
better yet Kristi, join the American Begonia Society!
PHOE is Tim's place her, Palm Hammock Orchid Estate
Tim is a sweetheart! Convention chairman too.
more later...
I just gotta see a picture once you bring all your babies home...I have no idea who Tim is...Does he have a book? What state is the PHOE in?Million more questions on the way, cause I need help...
Kristi how are your babies doing?I've been ignoring mine and so far so good..The leaves I started in the water are getting crispy and I had to pitch them..Did you get any new ones?
Loretta....
Loretta, Tim Anderson is the owner of the begonia nursery I've been posting photos of. (just wait, I'm sure Butch will be posting much nicer photos) Nursery's name is Palm Hammock, here's the link for you to take a look at.
http://www.members.tripod.com/~PalmHammockOrchidEst/begmasterpage.html
PHOE is in Miami.
I found your pictures on another thread,oh my you sure did buy you some beauties..I went to Tim's site and saw so many I really wanted to get,but he does'nt do mail order..Thanks for answering my questions...Hope to see all your goodies and Butch's soon..
Loretta...
Loretta, give them a call I think they do mail order but don't have their site set up for a shopping cart.
Thanks will do that in the morning..I got the soil less soil and all the other stuff too see if I now will have luck..Do you know where they sell the wicks for the pots? Some of mine did'nt have any of those in them..TIA...
Loretta...
Laurie you gave me a plant cutting said from Tim is this the same Tim ?
oh that was 'From Tom'
here's the story behind. begonia 'From Tom'
My guru begonia gal from the arboretum in SFO had a friend who's mother passed on her collection to her son Tom when she passed on. It was given to my guru who named it 'From Tom' (a profuse white bloomer!)
Nothing wrong with decorative pots if you like them. They usually cost more but whatever turns you on. I prefer cobalt blue glazed pots and fiberglass reproductions of urns, sensual shapes, monotonal motifs, etc.
Here is 'Caribbean Queen' in an eighteen inch fiberglass pot with a simple design; a variegated yucca with kalanchoe thrysifolia in a square blue glazed pot; a variegated agave in a deep cobalt blue square glazed pot; and 3 large aloes in a resin pot with a cattail motif on the outside.
Butch ~ I doesn't matter what you put your begonia's in. No one even notices the pot which pales in comparison!!!
Most of my pots are terra cotta, I really like the ones that have the moss on them. I also like planting in just odd and in things. I haven't tried my begonia's yet but last summer I had several things planted in stuff I picked up at an antique store, my grandmother also has a stash of old stuff that I like to use. i.e. old churns, wash tubs, etc. Last year I had a old cast iron pot that she heated her water to wash clothes in, I put a fern, ivy and impatience in it and it was soooo beautiful.
By the way you Caribbean Queen is gorgeous!!!
Later~ Kristi
Lali, someday, I would love to come take a tour of your begonias and take notes, so many varieties!
Sue, that would be great! I'm hoping to get some garden 'clean up' done this coming weekend. Have hired a friends teenage son and my own to pull the ever growing weeds.
Late spring when it isn't a mud pit in my yard would be about the best time. Drag Kell along with you!
We'll make plans!
Just caught up on this thread, and would love to see some pictures of Loretta's pots with the rhinestone butterflies! LOL
Sharon
Hey Sharon you better be careful I might just send you one..lol..I'll even add some more paper butterflies and rhinestones.. :o)))
Loretta...
Loretta,
Come on now and be a sport. I just have to see these flower pots! LOL Surely we can find a plant of some kind to complement the pots :-))
Sharon
Loretta~ Have you thought that it might be those ugly pots that is the culprate in the death of your begonia's. Just maybe they know how ugly their pot is and also how ugly you believe the pots to be. I mean, who would want to be put in an ugly pot? It's like, if I turn yellow and drop all of my leaves then maybe Loretta will see how much we dislike our pots and plant us up in some pretty pots. All of the other plants you have that are in pretty pots make fun and tease your begonia's for having ugly pots. A depressed plant is never a pretty plant!!
O.K. I am just joking! No, I haven't bumped my head on something. Just trying to have a little fun this morning!!
Now to something more serious. How long did it take your order from Plants For Kids to get to you. I have a hidden driveway and many times the postman is unable to find my house and will take the package back to the post office, where I have to go and pick them up. I don't want to miss the postman becuse I don't want the begonia's to be in the package any longer than necessary. Also, I can't wait to get them!!!
Talk to you later! ~ Kristi
Kristi it only takes a few days for your delivery,If you ordered them Mon.you will have them by the weekend..My replacements are doing great and no way are they going in those ugly pots..I'm going to a garden seminar and will be asking for advice as to what I'm doing wrong..I see so many that I want to order but running scared because I've killed so many..How are yours doing?Like I said my cheapos are doing great..I did buy 2 more at the nursery but no name is on those,I will have to try to identify them..Did you see the ones that Kell bought they are huge? The nursery I was at had one smaller and they wanted $59.95 sure passed that up in a hurry..When I have success with them I would'nt mind paying for one,but not until will I spend that kind of money..
Loretta..
Loretta~ I completely understand. It isn't just the money being poured down the drain but I actually makes me sick to see one sooo gorgeous when I get it and watching I drop leaf after leaf :o( . Take notes at the seminar so we can reference them. You can share the info. you recieve. Later ~ Kristi
Yeah Kristi we're just gonna have to learn together and maybe we will have success yet..I'm trying a few of your methods and see how that works for me..We can't give up we>> :o))..!!
Loretta..
Hi Kristi how's everything going with your begonias?Looks like mine are starting to behave and finally start growing for me... ;o)))
Your BB...Loretta...
