Showing off Spider

Abilene, TX

If you mean the cups the leaves are in, they are Solo cups from WalMart (the white ones). I poke holes in the bottom. Or you can buy them with holes already in the bottom for a little more money from a gardening supplier. The really little clear cups are from an AV website. I can find the name again if you are interested.

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

I would like to know the name of the website if that is okay. I'm sure they have other cute little things that I would like to look at.

Pam don't throw away the leaves just cut off any brown. They will come back. I water with warm/hot water. Not too wet but not fry. Give them pleanty of light and keep warm . Your babies with Mom leaf are looking great ! Great growing ! Have you fed them ? Some Elanor's Vf-11, Fish Emolsion or plant food, as much light close as possible , and warm will shoot theose babies right up :)) Your doing a great job !
You plants and blooms are so pretty ! I hope all the ones I sent you boloom and grow crazy and you get lots of baies one for you and some to share and trade ! It's always good to put a leaf or two down from each plant , insurance in-case the plant does not make it and two for trading, secret swaps and sharing.

Hi Had!

These little cups are in the photo where you show your cold damaged leaves. They are very tiny and on the right.

So, the other bigger white ones are from Walmart? I have to go there! :o))

Abilene, TX

Spider - here is where I got the tiny cups for mini leaves...

http://www.steverd.com/violets/

You email him your order. He is very nice.

I have also gotten Oyama pots and soil from here....

http://www.avplanters.com/

Let me know if you need leaves. I can send you some. Several people on this board have sent me free leaves, etc.

Jesse, also take a look in our AV sticky, there is a section for supplies and vendors that sell supplies.

I use the Dixie 2 oz. portion cups from CostCo. I poke holes with an old soldering iron, (very quick) and I know Critter uses a skewer heated on her stove, does the same thing. I like them because the cost is very cheap. 1200 for $10.00

When my leaves are rooted in the perlite, I transfer them to the dixies (aka Solo, but not that brand).

If you take a look at this not-yet-finished tutorial you'll see the soldering iron I use (cheap one, like $8 from Ace) http://www.flickr.com/photos/begonias-photos/sets/72057594059053819/

And one more thing Jesse, I just put down some rooted leaves with tons of pink, as soon as they are big enough, I'll have some for you!!

Abilene, TX

Oh, 1200 for $10.00...........(runs off to find some). That sounds great. Do you order online or go to CostCo? Is that one of the places you have to be a member?

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

great info everyone!

Lilburn, GA

Thank you very much Had. I am going to order from him now!

Lilburn, GA

Hi Had,

Thank you very much for offering to send me some leaves. I would love that. You are very kind.

Please tell me the best way to pay for postage. Do you have a paypal account? I can send you money this way or check.

I am really inspired looking at your photos. you are doing a great job with your AVs.
best wishes

Here's the little cups I use. Yes, CostCo is one of those places you have to be a member. BUT I think Sam's might have something like them. Any Restaurant supply should carry them.

Ohhh noooooo, more photos!

My mouth is watering!!!!!

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Yes I buy my pots Secret Gardens starting 4 cents.
Hubby gets 150 solo 3oz cup less than 2.00.
Laurie maybe you can ship us the 10.00 cases a cheap way ?

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Sure, I'll look into it. Do you like using that size cup?

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

I like those cups Laurie - and by the way - is that drink for you or your leaves???

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Laurie those would be perfect !

Lilburn, GA

Begonia, I have just found a cost co near here. Which department do you get your cups from? I looked and there is no restaurant supplies in this one.

Do you know the name of th ecups?

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

you might have to look by the cups/paper goods/napkins etc

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

I know the one by me- including BJ's has all the paper towels, napkins, food storage containers etc - all stocked in the same area

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Yes, spider, in the napkin, paper plate area. These are made by Dixie, and they are called 2 oz. Portion cups (without lids)
The kind you get sauces and what not in at a to-go place.

Anita, no that wine was left over from a Crab Feed party the night before. We had 9 people over and plowed through a dozen crabs! YUMMY!
DH drove over to the coast and bought them live and snapping (he has a band-aid on his index finger - his war wound for putting the poor fella in a pot of boiling water!) I was just too lazy to wash them...

But c'mon I live in the Napa Valley, we popped the cork on at least 5 bottles that night! Good wine, good friends. Good meal, cant be beat!

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

and you didn't call me?????

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

my bad! so sorry!

Abilene, TX

Begonia - do you put all your leaves in the 2 oz? or just minis? The three oz works pretty good, but takes more soil.

Nice little leaf farm. : )

Lilburn, GA

I need your help, peeps.

I am confused about covering the leaf cutting with a dome/plastic bag.

I went to Reed's website (sticky) and saw that he doesn't cover them. I am making some leaf cuttings of my violets and wouldlike to know if you all cover them or not.

Another question, Do you use wicking pots?

thank you!

Abilene, TX

Well, I love using wick watering. It has worked well for me. And the leaves I cover do much better than the leaves I don't. Then again, I live in a very dry climate.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

I us to cover ; but I don't cover anything now.
I learned the get air circulation, light , need watering and feeding more often and grow babies faster for me !
I use to wick leaves ;
Now I don't I fount them getting too wet.
Now I water little bits from top when needed.
I do wick plants but I never sit them in water. I let them dry out a little in between. Just mild moist.
African violets don't enjoy cold wet feet.
I water with Hot/Warm water or food.

Abilene, TX

Spider, check your dmail. : )

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Anna I would try both ways label and date them . and see which way you like best which way works best for you ! I have tried every which way you can imagine lol
Each time I do it I get a little better at it. I also have learned to keep things as simple and organized and easy as can be so Hubby and nurses and friends can help me :))
I don't know much but I do know God sure has grown me a lot of babies . The more I share the more babies there are. I still don't have one spcae extra on my stands which I need for my plants to bloom and grow properly. I can't wait to get all the adopted babies to their new homes !
In the past year-years and half I have grown well One thousand Varieties :)) Most leaves give me 3-6 or more babies. And I have lost track of how many I have shared .I only have window and stand room to keep several for myself. I just got my plant stands ( started getting them and lights) a two years end of this March when I first started growing by leaf ! It took one seller giving me a free leaf to get me started. I thought 6-9 even 12 months to get a blooming plant was to long.
Then I joined a local group and learned all kinds of good growing techniques :))
Most big time growers, Hybridizers, Nursuries I have read about don't cover.

Lilburn, GA

Thank you peeps!

Violet, you are surely a talented grower! I wish I lived near you.

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Had, right now, I'm using the 2 oz dixie cups to root the leaves in, after they show roots in the perlite (1/2" or so), when the babies are mature enough, I have little white 2" pots and some thumbs for the minis.
But I'm just the new kid on the block, I just started this leaf thing in late November. Lot's of trial and error ( I learned how NOT to wick my plants! Now I know better than to do it the way I was) I'm learning what works for me in my environment. But I've had lots of failures too.

The 2 oz are just a cheap way to go for me. I tried the 3 oz Solo cups, but found I was tempted to keep the petiole too deep which ='s along time before the babies show themselves.

Lilburn, GA

I got some cups at Sam's club yesterday. they are the shallow 2oz cups. I got a box of 2000. It wa the only quantity they had.

I am rooting about 10leaves from my Optimaras. I mixed perlite, vermiculite and some seed/cutting starter compost. Is it OK?

Begonia, I missed you yesterday.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Spider sounds perfect !

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Thanks Spider, I had a hot date with my husband in San Fran. He took me to a musical and dinner - then we stayed overnight in Union Square. It was perfect timing because I went to the SFO AVSA meeting and came home with several bags of leaves and a chimera AV.
(more info on the coveted chimeras in our sticky)

You all won't hear much from me on Mon or Tues either. Getting plants and clothes packed for my trip to Miami. (begonia convention) Woo Hoo!

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

Happy Travels!!! Are you stopping in and seeing anyone when you are down there? I've heard it mentioned, but I didn't know for sure. Also - TAKE PICTURES! Then we can all feel like we were with you Laurie!

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

I'm honored she's coming to see me ! Yippee and can help me do some packing :))

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Anita, sure am! I'm hooking up with Lorry and her DH Chris (and hopefully Bob) for a visit to Fairchild's Gardens in Miami. Then I'm meeting up with a few other begonia heads at the convention from DG and then I'm driving to Ali's just before I come home.

Going to try and get to Key west for the day while I'm there. Sadly, wont be able to take in a sunset unless I want to miss one of the seminars.
I'm a beach/sunset loving kind of girl, so I might not make it to one of the seminars. Beaches are like magnets to me!
I drove to the beach yesterday while waiting for my AVSA meeting, it was only about 24 blocks from where I was, so of course I had time to spare and the ocean pulled my beetle to it!

ALSO want to publicly THANK Anita for my BEAUTIFUL birthday card! What a surprise to get a hand made lovely card in the mail! Anita is so talented!!! {{{hugs}}}

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

She sure is when was your birthday ? Did I miss it ? Take a picture I want to se it :))

Lilburn, GA

Begonia, have a wonderful time! Are you going to see Butch? If you are, please send him a hug from me.
