SF Bay Area Tropicals sources?

Fairfax, CA(Zone 9a)

Hi. I'm wondering if there's a good local source for colocasia, xanthosoma, and other sub tropical plants. Any leads?

Thanks,
Karen

In general for tropical/subtropical plants the best place I've found locally is Berkeley Horticultural Nursery. But I would definitely call them first before making the trip because I don't collect the plants you mentioned so I don't know if they have a good enough selection to make it worth the drive. I think I've seen some colocasia type plants in the houseplant sections at nurseries like Sloat and Navlet's too, although again since I don't collect these I don't know if what they have would count as being a good source or not. There aren't too many local nurseries that I know of that really specialize in tropicals, so your best bet may be mail order--if you search Plant Scout for the plants you're looking for it may point you to some mail order sources for what you're looking for.

Costco just had some nice colocasias, but I think they're gone now.

Hi Karen,
Our local Cost Co in Marin had 3 varieties of Colocasia in stock last week. Regular C. ensculenta, an aquatic variety and Black Magic
For the first time ever I saw Black Magic in bags.
Many of the Colocasia that I have in my garden came from CostCo.

I'll be doing a variety of orders from my wholesale suppliers this spring so if you see something that you want from San Marcos,
Suncrest or Monterey Bay , let me know and I will add it to my order.
Several of the jobs I have going are close by to your house so you only will have a short drive to the jobsite to pick up your goodies.

Thanks for your responses--In fact, I came home from Costco last week with Black Magic & "Esculenta", though the Black Magic bag also says this, so I wasn't sure what I actually got. The green one didn't have a cultivar name--but the tubers are HUGE!! If anyone knows its cultivar name, let me know.

Great offer, Michelle! I'll write you privately about this soon as I check out the possibilities.
