Arborvitae

New Madison, OH(Zone 5a)

My question is this: Can Arborvitae be trimmed to keep the height controlled? Thanks for any help.

With my tongue firmly in cheek I suggest that you plant them no higher than the smallest female deer and stand back.

Yes, they can, provided you don't trim too hard. As long as there is some green cover, you're OK, but cut back into brown stems and you're left with a permanent dead brown patch

Probably better to plant a selection that won't grow too tall (there are some available out there), or another conifer that suits your size limit. Trying to maintain them at a lower height than they prefer is a never-ending battle.

Thank you all. I appreciate the information.

I have been looking at Arbs for my front yard. The choice for me is Holmstrup. It's deep, dark green, broadly pyramidal. I am sorry I didn't try to save one I already had, as they are fairly slow growing, but it had some damage from a yew that grew into it, and I was told that it couldn't be pruned, it would always have a hole in it.
