Plant how many seeds per square foot?

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

Hi, everybody--

I have been working on my Wintersowing and, now, if you don't mind, I have a question (after I've planted just about everything!) (-:

How many seeds do you plant, say, for instance, in a square foot of planting mix?

(I've been planting about a whole packet in one large roasting pan, but now I think I really over did it. )

How many seeds to a 4x4 inch square plastic pot?

Do you count out the seeds and put them in an ordered design, or just sprinkle a packet of seeds around and let it go?

Do you save a lot of left over seeds from year to year?

Thank you very much, t.

p.s.-- here's my progress so far...

tabasco. Wow and wow again! That's a good question! I will be really bummed if I find out my meticulous placing with tweezers was unnecessary. LOL

I just sprinkled...

WOW! Tabasco!! You go girl!!

Tweezers??? I sprinkle, drop, or scatter seeds depending on their size. Big seeds just drop. Medium seeds get scattered and small seeds get sprinkled. With dust-like seeds, I try not to sneeze!! :~)

Yes, I have a lot left over from year to year....all the better to trade with!

I think I sprinkled, dropped, and scattered (to use DG technical terms LOL ) too densely.

Actually, I soaked almost all of my seeds in Hydrogen Peroxide (why? I don't exactly know why I did it, except that I have a propensity to kill all my plants with too much love...) anyway, I soaked all of my seeds in the peroxide/water solution and then took a teaspoon and 'dribbled' my seeds in the sollution onto the soil.

About one packets worth in each roasting pan. Too much I'm sure, now. Oh, well.

Brugmansia seeds need to be given a Hydrogen Peroxide soak before planting to discourage viruses from growing and killing off the seeds. I also water them with Chamomille Tea to prevent damping off once the seeds have germinated. Man, I need to move to a warmer climate, so I can wintersow my Brug seeds outside!

Actually, you don't need to do anything to wintersown seeds. Mother Nature takes care of them for you! The constant freezing, thawing cycles prohibits nasty viruses & damping off to affect your seedlings. But if it makes you feel better to soak your seeds in Hydrogen Peroxide before you put them outside, go right ahead! :~)

tabasco,

Thanks naturewalker for the links. I suppose the Square Foot Gardening concept could be adapted to Wintersowing, at least in terms of seed sowing, although I am not all that familiar with SFG methods. I must get the book from the library.

I am happy to report, though, that many of my seeds are sprouting now, so I can quit with the anxiety over ruining them with my Hydrogen peroxide soak!

Now to plan the new garden!
