I've got 'Silly Girl' and 'Rob's Smarty Pants' on your wish list, Anita, and I put your name right on their pots this morning!
I've been putting leaves & suckers into individual 1 or 3 oz plastic cups (w/hole for drainage) rather than into a tray... seems to be working, and I like being able to rearrange them easily. For 'Silly Girl', there's an extra plantlet in the pot with yours, I have a couple more little plantlets in another leaf pot, and I have another pair of leaves down. I also have plantlets put aside for Allison, Lorry, and Lali, not to worry!
Hey, begonia -- Dmail me with your list before you place your VG order, and I'll let you know if there are any that I already have for you or have on order. (Yes, this is still on topic, since a lot of what we're both looking at from VG have girl foliage!)
Anita, here's a picture of your two plantlets this morning... 'Rob's Smarty Pants' is on the right, and 'Silly Girl' is on the left.
Girlie Girls
Is Rob's smarty pants a girl foliage? And speaking of Smarty pants, does anyone have Ms. Smartypants? And Does FC say if it is girl or not?

I'm gonna get me that plant!
Not a girl but a Chimera and wish I had her :))
Ms. Smartypants (S. Sorano) Semidouble chimera white pansy/pink stripe, green frilled edge. Medium green, ruffled. Semiminiature

I have a 'Rob's Smarty Pants' for adoption too !
Rob's Smarty Pants (8614) 05/31/1997 (R. Robinson) Semidouble white ruffled star/blue-speckled pink edge. Medium green, glossy, wavy, serrated. Miniature
I just found Ms. Smartypants at Lyndon Lyons. WOoHoO!
They're working on their 2006 list now, says it should be updated soon. They have some Girl foliage plants
hhhhhmmmm I'll have to peak at their girls. I have lots of girls coming from VG and jill :))
Sorry, 'Rob's Smarty Pants' was off-topic! ;-) But I'm glad Allison has one available too, as both of my larger plantlets have been spoken for... and I'm not yet confident about the roots on the smaller sucker.
I think it's so cool that several of us have become enamored of girl foliage.... we'll have fun sharing around our new acquisitions!
I ordered 'Skagit Victory Trail' and 'Sparks and Spangles' from VG so far (plus some others with nongirl foliage). I may try to add a couple to that order if I decide I can't wait for leaves from Allison... I tried to put more of the AVs on her list onto mine instead (planning to share of course), but she was too excited about them and said she needed them asap and couldn't wait! Allison, LMK if you change your mind about waiting for any of those girlies!
Oh I placed my order and can't wait to get them :)) I'm sure I'll do another order in Sept. with her as there were so many more I wanted :))
Nope can't give up my girls !
ooohh..so excited..thanks Jill!
My Bad Girl (wasp) arrived today. (along with Blue Tail Fly) and the seller sent a bonus 'Fantasy Girl'
Can some nice person with FC look up Fantasy Girl (and Bad Girl) for me - pretty please...
Bad Girl (David Senk) Single blue/purple wasps heavily lobed girl foliage Semiminiature (User Database)
David senk has never registered most of his plants. I think I put this one in as I grew Bad Girl and some of his other girl
Fantasy Girl is an awesome plant I grew many of. You will love her . My last leaf last year 2004 went to my nurse and she great a real nice one. It was when I got like 175 leaves from Linda Blooming Jungles and I gave my Nurse a few dozen she wanted to learn how to grow Av's and she did great !
Fantasy Girl (218) 05/10/1952 (R. Behnke/H. Cox) Single lavender/blue or purple fantasy. Serrated girl foliage. Standard
OK, Allison.... but one of the advantages to being able to pick out my plants personally is that I think almost half the ones I came home with last time had at least 2 plantlets in the pot... so I got additional nice ones to share right away!
I'm also going to just ask about girl foliage when I'm up there... That's how I got 'Biscayne Trail' and 'Kingwood Blue' last year... I don't think either of those were on my list from her catalog.
Does someone have Peppermint Girl? I can't remember but it sounds familiar.
I think it has some kind of pink flower and light green foliage- Jill, it was, had babies.
JIll has it !
Oh I know Jill all the plants I got from her had 3 or 4 plants in a pot :)) It was so much fun getting them and opening them and re-potting the babies. Ever sense November I was waiting on her new Catalog to come out and promised myself as soon as it did ASP I would place an order :)) In the mean time I looked at her sight often dreaming. I would order one of each if I could .But I will order more in the Fall ! The ones I ordered after cutting my list to less than half I did order ones I really want and have been looking forward to ! I think I placed my order before anyone !
I know you can pick them up thats nice for you. But I enjoy also getting my box from them and she does not charge much for shipping ! Just beacasue I ordered a plant you can still order it too ! :))
I ordered plant I really want. Life is short and I'd like those little girls and minis to enjoy now ! VG selection is the best and her plants are large. And the 14 or so plants I bought last Sept. all f the I have share leaves , and plants ( everyone had one or more in pot) , put down leaves and they have never stopped blooming I just love the plants I get from them !
Two year three this Mother day I grew a 'Biscayne Trail' in hanging pot so full and large in full bloom and bud and Thunder Surprise in full bloom and bud and sent them to my Mother -in-law in MI toward her Mom day gifts :)) Robert went to visit her in July and her said they were still blooming in her kitchen window !
I am so Happy I nought my Angel Tears Trail from VG last year. It had several plants and so many leaves I have shared and mine is large in pan pot ! It's Vintage fantasy bloomer stnadard trailer and they don't sell it anymore. My Aly's Rosy Baby trailer ( only other place I've seen sold Fay sells leaves). She was flowing out of the pot I got 4 plants from her. Gave tons of leaves away , put many leaves down and grown quite a few plants from her. I wanted her so bad love her and their not selling her anymore either so I am so happy I got her :))
She told me if it's warm enough she may ship in April :)) Either way I am so excited can't wait to get them :))
Please order what ever plants you want . As I did :))
The reason I ordered them is I want them now not in the Fall :))
OK, here I am showing my ignorance -- again!
You have made mention of girl plants. What is that?
Re: that tray full of leaves above - is the white stuff perlite?
Diane
Yep! It's pure perlite. I use it to root everything in. It's on a heat mat kept at 72º.
Girl leaves are a type of AV leaf. There is a pretty good explanation in our sticky, and here http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/557944/ (Discussion on ‘Girl’ Leaves)
and some great links to leaf type info in the sticky
but to get you started here are a few links

Laurie - do you reuse your perlite or toss it after the leaves get ears? Also - when do you transplant them into soil?
Jill KINGWOOD BLUE-(5448) 08/20/1983 (Eyerdom) Double light blue. Medium green, quilted girl foliage.
from VG i was going to order one you said to take off my list you have for me !!
I got an extra plantlet in my pot of 'Kingwood Blue' last fall, and I'm thinking it should be close to blooming size... It's had your name on it for months, Allison! I'm afraid everyone else will have to wait for the leaf pots to produce ears... this variety is being slow about it... but keep your fingers crossed, because it has the biggest gorgeous double blooms (I mean big like 2 1/2 inches across!).
I've been looking at the VG web site again too. :-) Oh, I know I can order ones even if you've also ordered them, LOL, but I was trying to use that as a method to restrain myself a little, at least for the advance order. I know I will find additional plants I "must" have once I'm up there!
Allison, do you have a 'Biscayne Trail' still? or should I add it to your wish list?
Anita, I haven't been doing this long enough to really have a method with the perlite. I did have a batch that had a case of fungus gnats and some green mold growing so I put the tray in the bathtub and poured hot bleach water over the whole thing, then rinsed it for a long time. I have since just put it into a container since it still has the bleach smell. I figured it wasn't worth reusing for AV's at this point, but I may mix it for my greenhouse mix later on. I buy the big 4' tall bag that run $15 so it's pretty cheap when you use it that way. The little bags add up fast.
I leave them in the tray until I can see that they have fairly decent roots. At least 1/2", then they go into the little pots. Lately I've been using the 2 oz. portion containers (Dixie) from CostCo. There are 1200 in a box and the box is $10 - pretty cheap. I bought thumb pots and the next size up for when I separate the moms from their pups. The pots are nicer for sending to friends etc. But the Dixie's are perfect because they are squatty and dont tip the way Solo cups to. (photos shows one after rooted, this one has pups now)
What I like about this is that I always know they are 'rooted' once they are in pots. No guessing or tugging to see. I constantly lift the leaves out of the perlite to check for roots and then just pop them back in. (like obsessive compulsive about it LOL) I have been getting roots in about 2 weeks on some, others have been sitting there since January 3rd. (DP specials, must not have been the most robust of leaves!)
I water about every third day with a 1 quart watering can filled with warm water and VF-11 only. If the top looks dry, I water. When dry, the perlite looks chalky, vs. transleucent.
So far this works good for me, BUT when our weather warms up in the the triple digits, I doubt I can keep enough water in there to stay moist. I'll likely go to domes and filling the tray below with water at first. Last fall I rooted everything begonia ina 30/30/30 mix. It did fine, but as the weather cooled off, fungus gnats proliferated like crazy. So I got pre-strike for mosquitos to mix with my water. Then I just gave up and switched to perlite. My begonia Guru in SFO uses it, so I figured so can I.
Cute leaf with roots ! I know people that all they grow in is Perilite and Vemiculite mixtures. I met a ladt at our first show that does . I think she was from Tampa ?
Some people are alergic to peat moss, soil stuff another reason they use it !
neat the way you can check on them - I do the tug thing on my leaves....haha
