I have a friend who wants me to help him transplant some Virginia pines. I haven't seen them yet, however he says they are about 3" to 4" trees.
Does anyone have any experience with these trees?
Thanks,
Darrick
Transplanting Virginia Pines
I assume he means 3-4" in diameter, but you might want to verify that. If so, they will need to be taken with large soil balls (30-36" diameter) in very early spring or early fall. Easiest method is to bring in a mechanical tree spade if possible. Try to get one about 42" size to give the trees a little better start, but settle for 36" in necessary. Also, make sure they are cultivated (planted) trees, not wild ones, and are growing in loamy soil, not sand or rock. If not, you will need to make some adjustments to the above advice.
