It started out a great day!! And now my name is MUD!!

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Kell, another thing you might try is cottage cheese. My vet told me about that. When my kitty was sick, he ate the cheese. I didn't know about the evaporated milk.
I hope Nick gets all better soon.

Bloomingdale, OH(Zone 6a)

Kell,

Did your vet run a Woods lamp over Nick? Or check his thyroid? A skin scraping? If this is Allergy, why didn't the vet prescribe Benedryl?

Sorry, but something just isn't sitting right.

mg

Kell, I'm trying to take in all that has been going on here. So So sorry to hear about Nick. Our companions are family and it's so difficult to see them go through this. I hope for the best.
I'm trying to type this as my two are trying to share my lap!!! They want to go out but it's much tooooo Cold.
Thinking of you...

Corte Madera, CA

kell, can't wait to get home today to check on nick news. i'm so glad he returned home, and responding well to condensed milk.

mg mentioned benadryl, and i have given my dogs benadryl in the past. it's never too strong, and if it doesn't combat the allergens, it makes the pets nap/rest. of course i'm not a vet, and i've only done that during an emergency scenario (camping). but nick is going to see the vet already, so he'll get real stuff, and your LOVE, and our prayers.

think good thoughts.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

hmm hope evap. milk doesn't upset his bowels. Cottage Cgeese sounds like the best bet. Please under no circumstances give him an asprin. They are deadly to a cat. Hope maybe a bath will get off what ever the allergin is. Glad he is home Kell. At least that worry is off your shoulders

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

So true, Donna. He is crouched in the bathroom. I have the heater on in there for him. I thought of the evaporated milk may go right thru him, but he needs to have something in his stomach. I was thinking of putting can food in the evaporated milk till it is a creamy consistency to see if he would like that.

I will buy cottage cheese in the AM, Susie for him!!

In the morning we are going to give him a bath. He will have had about 32 hours of rest then after 5 days of being without much to eat or drink. I just do not want to give him any more stress than necessary to make him more miserable. .

MG, no the vet just checked him over visually and took his temp. She did go over his body pretty carefully. I think though, I may go to another vet tomorrow. There was one that treated Molly when she was shot, and we were happy with the outcome. However, I did respect our vet's thought that Nick is very old and the less intervention the better. I have been to vets where they do anything to make a dollar. In fact I know doctors that do that too.

I do not want Nick to be manhandled. Though I do want him to get reasonable care and chance to go on. He is amazing he has lived this long. My husband said tonight, it is not his time yet.

I never thought of benedryl. I will go look it up to see if it affects the kidneys.

Kell get some can chicken for him and break it up in some of the broth. Will be very bland and easy on his stomach and the salt in broth may make him drink more.

Hmm I forgot about it too. Wonder why vet didn't say something. Last year Dudie got stung one evening and broke out in hives all over. My vets answering service malfunctioned and I was up all night worried that her throat would close up she was so swollen. Vet said to give benadryl. So I keep it on hand now

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Oh Kell, this is very hard. I woke up thinking about you guys.
When my Calypso was 5 months old, she still lived outside with her mom cat and brother. We fed them everyday like our indoor cats. It was getting very cold, and I didn't realize that she was hardly eating anything, she was so weak. I brought her in to our vet, and she weighed less than 2 pounds. The vet told me to feed her sweetened condensed milk and Gerber meat flavored baby food, either potted chicken or beef. She would gently lick it off the spoon, as it was easy to eat because it is smooshy. After a few days I included smashed up tuna in water, as most kitties love tuna, lol.

I hope Nick is feeling better this morning.

Corte Madera, CA

ditto on that.

i hope you and tom got some sleep, too.

EDITED TO SAY:

If we measure lives not in time but in grace, in the joy with which they are lived, and in the love they leave behind, then we have much to learn from our cats.

I'm so sorry Kell.

WOW guys. Thanks so much for all your kind thoughts. I was really worried about how my boy would take it, being so far away from home. And it was all OK. I called him before Tom took Nick to the vet and my son got to say good bye. (thanks Donna for the idea) Nick reacted to the phone so I knew he heard his voice. Then a few minutes later he called again to talk to Nick and this time Nick purred at his voice. It really helped T I think to be able to say good bye. Then when it was all over, we called our boy and we all cried together. It was very good to share our grief together. My son was more worried about me because I have been having a tough year. He is so sweet, he has called me a couple of times since.

I want to thank you all again. I am feeling better today! The sun is shining and Nick will always be loved. I am going out to dig soon, that always helps.

Here is my son with Nick just a few weeks ago. T was on his way to the airport to go back to NY and to school. He told Nick he would hide him in his coat and take him with him.
