Just for the record, I used the propane heater with no problem. My DH was really concerned about CO, so I didn't go inside till I had turned it off and let things air out a bit (the odor leaves a bit to be desired anyway). It was 1 deg outdoors and a nice toasty 50 deg inside the GH. I only had to use it for a couple of nights, but it has worked out well. All the plants have little smiles on their faces. :-) And my dwarf lemon has little buds on it!!! Yea!
Just spent a glorious day in the greenhouse!
Now thats what I need for those really rare nights when it is like 7 outside..I went out this morning about 7:30 just to see how cold it was in there, I had turned off the heat last night since I brought all the plants in but it was reading 40 since the sun came up but not sure how cold it was over night and we are expecting a little more snow tonight as well....Were is SPRING!!!!. I have a small propane that we use to use in the wood shop the last couple winters but we were always afraid of leaving propane unattended.
Thanks for the advice.
I bought a Max/Min thermometer last year.
It's probably one of the best investments in my GH.
It will give you an idea of what to expect on the colder nights.
Whether you need to get a supplimental heater, how big, pull in the plants, etc.
A while back I found that at 15 degrees at daybreak it held 46 as a Min in the GH so I wasn't worried about the10 degree temp last night.
It read 41 as a Min this morning.
67 out there now w/ a sunny 20 high today.

I have a max-min thermometer. I threw away the booklet of instruction and don't know how to set it. I just use it to tell me the temp in the GH house.
Hey Ric thanks again, my greenhouse is only and 8X8 maybe a little bigger but not by much and as long as we don't have an arctic blast as last night it seems to be ok, the main thing I have to worry about controlling how hot it gets in before I get home from work even with the fan running, last week I came home and was 110 with a good sunny day even though it was only in the 40's 50's that day....
Same here Raggins I can read what temp. it is in there but don't know any more about programming it, and was just one of those cheep ones anyway but I think it is finally giving up and the next one I get is going to have a unit in the house so I don't have to run out there so much and check..
I figure by tomorrow I can move them all back in since the temps. are coming back up a bit lows 20 something and even a couple upper 50's by mid week and It does quite well out there at those. But this cold snap just came about so quick that I just did not have a chance to do anything.

I have a unit in the house and it comes up with a mim and max but I don't know how to set it. It was set on a mim at 37 and would start beeping in the night. I finally put it in the refrig so I couldn't hear it. My heater is on high this morning and it is 27outside and 47 in the GH. I am just hoping I don't run out of propane. Come on Spring........
I have a wireless ,the sender unit sits in the green house on the north wall and the read out sits by the computer.
We hooked up our outside wood furnace to the greehouse and when it was 6 below the other night , it was 32 in the greenhouse ( the greenhouse is 8x10 and 8 ft talll). We haven`t insulated the greenhhouse yet, going to do that this summer so we can use it in the winter to.
Last April we put a electric heater in for April and May., it worked well
We put a thermostat set at 50 degrees ,it then would turn on when the temp got that low. April light bill went up 30 dollars and May`s 22. Aleta....
AFDolly, let me put in a plug for clear solar pool covers as insulation. They're cheap ($70 for a new 12x24), and work really well.
Those wireless thermometers are great, aren't they?!
Now I am going to have to check those out and finally the temps.are on the rise so I should be able to get the plants back out there by tomorrow. And running out today to pick me up a new thermostat and maybe this time I can figure out how it works.
Let me know too
