pollination - when is the best time?

Muehlleiten, Austria(Zone 7b)

Hello MG friends,

I would have a special question again there.
Is there somebody who is interested closer with the pollination of the MG and can help me ?

Is the stigma fertile before the pollen of this flower is ripe, or is it at the same time, or later?

I am very interested in it because I will have a large set of different MG plants in my garden this year. So that I do not harvest hybrid seeds, I must reach for the hand pollination.

Hello Dietmar,

The stigma is usually capable of facillitating the growth of pollen tubes, before the pollen from the same flower is matured and released.

I hope that answer is helpful to you and that you have some interesting hand pollination fun(!)...

Thanks for this precise answer.

The flowers are therefore proterogynous. I already need pollen if the flower opens.

How and how long is the pollen storable?

Hi Dietmar,

The pollen can be frozen for long term term storage, but I prefer not to freeze pollen...that is my personal preference...

I like to dry the pollen I use in the sun for approximately a day or so,until it has become partially dehydrated to allow me to then store it in a cool dry place until needed...

Hope that helps...

Thank you Ron, you have helped me very much. I am pleased that you let me participate in your knowledge.

It only must become summer now so that I can use this knowledge.

Dietmar
