Using Redwood Saplings for Arbors etc?

Santa Cruz, CA

We are lucky enough to live in the Santa Cruz mountains on a 2.5 acre ridgetop patch of heaven - chaparral on one side, mixed evergreen forest on the other, and redwoods - mostly look to be about 20 - 50 years old.

There are a lot of smaller redwood saplings that look like they would be ideal for building an arbor, trellis, or decorative fence etc.

Questions: Can you just cut and use saplings this way - do they last? Do you have to do anything to them? Can you sink them in concrete for stability - One project is to make an arbor that ties into a cottage, and grow vines up it to give shade from afternoon sun.

How much thinning is good for the redwood grove? Do you need to leave some saplings or can part of the area be made more garden like by removing most of them and planting e.g. Rhododendrons here and there - without risking the health of the grove.

thanks for any info, links etc.

I used saplings and tree cuttings to make this arbor and it was put into concrete.. This is the 5th year and don't know how long it will last. So far, it is holding up. Right now, I am looking into what we will eventually have to replace it with.

Boy, do they look nice though. I make some trellis looking things with some unknown saplings that grow here, I just braid them and set them where I want them.

Hopefully you can see some of the arbor here in these shots.

Thanks - these look very nice. I have saplings of various ages that are maybe 1-2-4 inches in diameter. I think I need to cut some and let them dry out for a season before building things with them (or attempting to), but am not sure.
