very interesting to read from 1950...in the midst of all the BOOMING interest in the AV...originally written in 1947..updated inthis edition in 1950..by Helen VAn Pel Wilson..who was very young when writing this...i took some pics of some of the pages with my camera...hope they are clear enough to give you an idea of how the thinking/propagation/ was..in those early days..lol

Great book Bob . I have those pictures ! I have a few of her old books one lent out . I read mine all the time over and over and never stop enjoying them :))

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

allison i have my peace lilly in the POT IN POT METHOD and it does very well...and the old method of putting some gravel in a container with a bit of "medium" over top and putting the leaves in...was interesting to re=read....and i got a little chuckle out of a discovery by some lady that more babies grew along the rim of the leaf than on the stem...also..when one reads...PUT SOME WAX PAPER OVER THE CONTAINER..he he...way before plastic wrap..

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Cool Bob..looks like a great read!

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Oh Allison..you would NOT believe this ladies Bonsai! And they were about 20 to 50.00 which I thought was SOOO cheap for this quality :)
She now has me agreeing to go to bonsai meetings and I am going to try to do this also :)
I even bought a serissa to try it out on :) A pink one!

Also..my favorite books are from the 50s too :)..I have one I adore!

Hibiscus schizopetalus. I could start a cutting from the one at the Botanical gardens if you ask me very nicely...
Kenton

Denver, CO

http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/790/index.html

It only blooms once or twice a year at te gardens, but it does not have the best soil or light there. And the flower lasts only day! Nice one, though. I like the name. I feel akin.

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Kenton..laurie was first...but i sure would like a cutting...i have had great success at rooting hibiscus....have you folks seen what are called the "exotic hibiscus"...?..big bucks...

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Yea, that's where I found the link. But their site frustrates me. LOL, it's a designers nightmare...
I have looked at their begonias, but they make purchasing a hassle the way it's set up, after a few minutes, I close the window. i'm just picky like that, LOL! (and yea, it drives DH insane)

I've seen one or two on eBay now and then, but haven't looked for a while.

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

ok, I just reread what I wrote and gosh that sounded snooty! I'm just a bit critical where web design is concerned. If the site isn't easy to navigate and purchase, I'm gone. Just didn't want my AV friends to think I'm snooty, because it wouldn't be the first time I would have been accused of it! LOL.

Kenton, lets see what Lorry says, if she's not able, then I'll say in my best snooty-less mannerful way, Pretty Please with whipped cream and strawberries on top... And I might bust out a CD of HA and TBB! woo hoo!

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

oh laurie don't get me astarted again on Herb Albert etc....lol...i have MANY more stories to tell.....i am very much into hibiscus..i'll ck for you also laurie.....the russian site has some things others cannot find...they even have Lorry's husbands lipstick palm...not easy to find...

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Bob, do they actually have it or do they just have the photo? That was the problem I had with the begonias, lots of photos, no way to order. =(

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

that hibiscus reminds me so much of my succulents that are blooming now

Thumbnail by junglebob
Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

oh laurie..have never known them not to have it..if they don't they say so...might be worth an email?

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

if you had time yuou could visit them when you're here

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Oh, what a good idea! How close to Miami are they? Uh oh, sound like I might get into trouble! Another nursery road trip! I knew I sould have rented the UHaul and not the Kia!

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

But Lauire do you have round trip ticket ? Maybe it would be cheaper to drive the U-haul home with new plants rather than shipping everything :))

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

he he...well Laurie...you're trip may not be as planned...rofl

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Yea, I have a R/T ticket, but I'll probably have to buy another seat next to me to bring home boxes of plants! he he he...
i'll probably ship my clothes home and carry the plants and put them in the suitcase.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Laurie I don't think you can fit a u-haul of plants in your suit case lol

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

lalurie..just get some flat rate priority boxes ahead of time..have them addressed to you etc...and fill them up and send them when you leave...they get there in 3 days from here

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Yea Bob, I think that's what I'll have to do. Since the sale is over on Sunday and I go to Ali's on monday, I don't want to have them sitting in the car for that long. So I'll box them all up and ship them off. I think I'll pull them out of their pots and remove some soil.

Not able to fit a uHaul worth in my suitcase?, just you watch me He he he!!!! I'm a creative packer!

Denver, CO

Fancy...

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

one has to be creative in everything...lol....you'll get everything together..once in the 80's..i came to visit my folks here in Fl .....I had made fresh orange juice...froze some...put it in my suitcase..when i landed in L.A....they had lost my suitcase someplace...2 days later they delivered it to my house..and the juice was still frozen...lol

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

I shot you a dmail about the hibiscus Laurie.
One of the dealers said he had some but not with him!
He gave me a website to order it for 10.00 .
I can send you the link also once I dig it out of my purse :)
