I received my 15 leaves of different streps today...i have read the excllent sticky and others including dibley's etc..what actual experience have you had...ie...cutting the leaf...leaving it in tack and put n medium?...which method have you had best success ...bob

Bob did they only send you 2-3 inch cuttings ?
If they were mine I'd not cut them anymore. I have experimented left and right and no mater what I do go back to point A.
This is for me.... I do best in very light soil-less mixture. I put holes in 3-5 oz. solo cups fill them up with soil-less mix. make a little slot in the soil , slip leaf in cover lightly , water threw. and sit under light . I don't always have a lot of light room some sit in open mini green house or where ever I can on plant stand.
But they all grew babies ! I sent one to Lorry still has Mom on it. I put it in a 2.50inch pot and I like them full so I did not separate left it to grow more. Down the road when it's large she can separate or keep large and put in a hanging basket !
When I have covered they rotted for me, too much water they rotted, and I have many times tried big covered shallow conatainers with just perilite cutting the rib out. But I used longer leaves ( I always like using longer leaves) . It waa clear container with holes in the top and I covered I had no luck. So I decied to keep with the way that always works for me. I have one Mom leaf that grew the baby on her back. lol I posted pictures some where I'll have to find them !

I'm ultimately going to make a tutorial out of those photos, but since I don't have much to show for the progress yet, I'm waiting until I get ears etc.
I had good luck in getting my Suzie to sprout ears - same process as with Hector. The only difference was that I cut the end of the leaf down since it was so long. I have to remember to take a pic later as the babies are huge. I just need to know when they need to be repotted..but wait for the pic first

laurie..yes i have read them before...and i need to go back....i am leaning to cutting them in many sections..and some not at all etc..and see what happens...but i like the fail safe method...(if there is one) that Allison mentioned..especially with the small ones...i will do it in the morning after gym....
just cked mail and we had substitute mailman and he took my rainbow violets package back to p.o...i will have to pick up in the morning...hope they are ok

Hope you get tons of babies. One thing I know for sure Strep's like to be dry. I let mine get dry before watering . Streps will recoop from wilting and drying out, but get them too wet they die :((.
Allison you are correct because i let the 4 streps that i have here dry and than water and they come right back...just hope the rainbow violets are alright at the post office

Yes I find it safe for me to leave the leaf rib intake and
root like Av leaf. But then the rib out like Laurie did might work real fine for you :))

allison l..they took the box back to post office...i'll get there when they open at 830am in the morning....normally my regular mailman would have left it ..but i did notice it requires a signature...wonder when jack will send mine...haven't heard anything from him on sending...hoping the Helen VanPelt Wilson book i bought comes soon...

allison yes i got the strep leaves today...the post man delivered that priority box about noon or so...been couple weeks with jack i think...i need to ck all this out..i'm getting much too busy and not doing justic to everything
strep leaves that came today are from bloomin jungle in NY..Linde Rowe....this is a pic of watermelon wine...i think it's very pretty
Bob, here's some root photos of my streps done with the slice along the mid-rib. These went down in perlite about two or three weeks ago. (right around Jan 7-9?)

Anita I keep mine together a long time. I hare separating Streps as one leaf if a plantlet and I like mine full. I sent Lorry a plant I grew by leaf and the mom leaf if still with them. lol I just transplanted them into a 2.50 inch pot and it has been growing in Natural light. I like them to het big and bushy then go into pan pots or hanging baskets :))
Maybe Lorry can take a picture of the one I sent her.

Well I like them full like that; but most sellers separate them small as one leaf is and plantlet no crowns like Av's. I guess it depends how you like them
I like my Av babies to get large before I separate also ; except if their minis or Mom died. Sometimes when separationg Av babies and one leaf gave me like 6 babies or more and couple close to eash other I will pot them together and when they are bigger I separate and give them their own pot then. They grow better for me this way.
allison and all..good morning....rain finally coming to us..and with garden fest this weekend..we don't want it..but.......the strep leaves did come with heat pack...and it was still hot..but i doubt she needed it....course maybe from NY...she did...off to the gym here and to get back to planting the strep leaves and pick up rainbow violets at p.o...enjoy the day everyone...and Lorry...got toes crossed rain won't spoil the weekend festivities..bob

hi anita and all...well the rain is still above us..but don't know how long...looking like big rain tomorrow and sunday not so bad at the garden fest...30miles south of me so maybe we'll luck out.
...stopped at p.o and picked up the strep plants that rainbow violets sent...all in good shape and she included a free leaf named RUBY...kind of a ruffled?..leaf....they all look in good shape..since they came from simi valley calif...no heat pack was used.
I will take a picture of her when I get home Allison :) She is a REAL BEAUTY :)
Unless they kick me out..the rain won't stop me from going both days bob :)

allison i got the strep leaves on thursday from Blooming jungle in NY...and yesterday i got the strep plants from Rainbow violets...she included a free leaf....it's kind of a ruffled strep leaf. HERE ARE pics i just took first one is of the 4 streps with ruby leaf in front...
