Blue Muffin Viburnum: Viburnum dentatum 'Christom'

Fairfax, CA(Zone 9a)

Anyone grow this in the S.F. Bay Area, z 9ish? I see it listed as z3-8 and wonder why the upper limit is 8. Any ideas or experience?

I don't have that particular viburnum, but I have a couple other ones and I'm pretty sure some of my other plants are also supposedly only good up to zone 8 but I haven't had any problems. Maybe it can't take too much heat or maybe it needs some winter chill to perform its best, but either way zone 9 is close enough to zone 8 that I would think you'd be OK

I think that sometimes the upper limit has to do with humidity that can occur in the southern states. Some catalogues, like the White Flower Farm will give a separate zone limit for the West, like zones 4-8/10 W, indicating that it can take a higher zone in the West because we don't have the humidity.

I think it depends on the plant though. There are some plants that need some chill to perform at their best.

Thanks for the answers. I puzzle over this issue on many plants!
