Bob where are you ? Are you ok ?
Where's Bob
Hmm I hear from him in email just about every day :)
I am sure he is fine :)
Allison, you are soo cute the way you watch out for all of us!
This weekend..you guys won't see much of me! I have Gardenfest here! Oh my am I EXCITED!!!! Vendors, shows seminars..in other words..HEAVEN
i am right here and fine....started the day early at the gym...than home to the jungle...where i finished cleaning out the gutters....than trimmed lots of things and got them in a pile for our brush pick up tomorrow...
...took some pics of a few things blooming out there....will share them later...
...still paying bills..ugh...there goes my income again..lol....did try to get in here earlier..but was having trouble.
...hope you all are doing well..bob
lorry may bump into you there as well...depends on everything here....
Cool Bob :) we plan on being there for both days :) Sooo good chance of it if you show up :)
Tonight when I get home I need to houseclean *UGH, ICK* I am the world's sloppiest housekeeper!
I guess it is because I am always planting, transplanting or on the boards :)
Good to see you Bob !
Well, as a consolation: Phyllis Diller said "Housework makes you ugly, so I don't do it!" I'd heed her advice - sounds reasonable to me - ya otta see what I look like after all my years of housecleaning!!!!!
Good advice. I will begin living in a dirty house right away.
I was slightly worried, too, Bob. I should tell you that there are green nubs on some of those taxodium, (Bald Cypruss) and green nubs on the Cactus cutting for you. Do you grow bamboo in the jungle?
Kenton
Kenton...i love bamboo..but i don't have any..i need to get some...one has to be careful which kind here as it really takes over.......Lorry's husband Chris is into bamboo i think....
Kenton glad the badly cypress doing well...it's hard to kill...i've been trying for 6 years..lol...well few folks know it..but Phyllis diller (since you brought it up)...was a very accomplished opera singer..musician.....yep....(knew each other in Ohio)...but when her husband didn't do so well and she had children....she started the comic routine...and got lucky....i do know of a sign that reads A CLEAN HOUSE IS THE SIGN OF A SICK MIND....lol.....here's a pic i took this morning while working in the jungle...it's of the stacking pot that Lorry gave me..i have strawberries, petunias...SNOW PEAS..in it...in the pic..you can see the 3 rose blossoms i put in there...he he...and the snowpeas...next to it is the gallardia....and tomatoes behind that.
Yup...Chris and I LOVE bamboo...we currently have Buddha belly :)
and I want to get some monastery bamboo :)
Bob is right though, in FL, we should only grow the clumping varieties of Bamboo..The running type really tends to take over the world here!
How very lush looking.
The house can just be dirty- I prefer to be in the garden (which is, of course, the reason that the house is dirty...)
Bob and Lorry; Do you want to try Phyllostachys vulgaris 'Vittata?' http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/31128/
I can propagate some for you to send with your other plants in spring. It has not seemed to grow too invasively in the Botanical Garden's greenhouse since 1997. (aside from messing with roofing panels!)
Kenton
LOL..I will show Chris when I get home and he gets home :) I am sure he would LOVE to try it Kenton.
Are you interested in Buddah Belly at all?
If so let us know :) I am not sure if Chris knows how to seperate it out yet ..but he is sure up to trying!
I'll look it up.
Ok what I know about it
it is a clumper....it can grown HIGH or if you keep it a little drier and don't fertilize it will buddah..
This means the nodules stay fat :) LOL
Chris can probably tell you more and will have him look at this tonight :)
Lorry, you and Chris would love Bamboo Sourcery in sebastopol. It is awesome!
We are also going to garden fest this weekend...so may be picking up some more goodies :) In the bamboo department.
We also have Palms in the back that we can seperate out come spring.
Off the top of my head are, fishtail, areca and cat palms..They are all clumping palms. I think we also have a bamboo palm back there (which is not bamboo at all !)
Oh I LOVE bamboo :) it is the only outside garden thing that I go NUTSO for :)
All my other stuff is container gardening :)
well bamboo and my serissa ;)
Thanks Lorry, but pity it is not quite hardy enough for my garden. I think there is a sad bit of it in the Botanical's Greenhouse. I think the only other bamboo I want to let loose and wild on my property is the black one: Phyllostachys nigra.
On that is a LOVELy one Kenton :)
How about persian violets? I believe they are cold hardy and can be grown outdoors :) Not exactly bamboo but a really pretty outdoor plant :)
I grow mine in containers outside :)
I still want to get monastery bamboo :) I LOVE it.
I will ask Chris to look at this thread and he will probably take you up on your generous offer :) He really loves bamboo.
There is going to be a few bamboo dealers at the gardenfest...did you want me to look around for anything for you?
Also one for carnivorous plants! I am shivering with anticipation
If you could watch out for a shippable and reasonable P. nigra, I would be in debt to you.
To lunch, Kenton
Hey HEY Hey Kenton, i'd love some! trade ya - variegated leaves for bamboo start?
Aha- I had better go by the Botanical (I work there) on the way home and get some more cuttings! You're on, Laurie (or whatever name you prefer!)
Hungry now, Kenton
LOL..you want Buddah belly to Laurie? We may have more varieties come spring also!
I will look..as a matter of fact..I will Dmail you with a couple of the vendors home pages :)
Dmail me with a price range you would want..if I find one in that amount..I will pick one up...And if not..I will keep my eyes open :)
Check out the gardenfest site...and see if there is anything you guys want me to keep an eye out for!
And will look for the bamboo Kenton..now GO EAT!
http://www.gardenclubofirc.org/gardenfest.htm
Kenton, is P. nigra aka Black Bamboo? Sombody posted in Plant Trading looking for it, and one person (in CA I think) answered that they had tons... LMK if you can't find the thread, and I'll hunt it up.
Oooh, Lorry -- a FISHTAIL palm! I've been telling DH I think we need to get one... to put next to the big aquarium, of course! I will have to think what I have that Chris may like in trade for a pup....
That's it, Laurie. When I was on a roadtrip, the cheapest/smallest P. nigra I could find was a 5' tall in a gallon for $21, and I brought it back to CO for an old friend who had wanted one for some time. As all bamboos, I would have to wait a number of years before I could get a peice from her. I am quite interested, even for several sources. I have just the place in mind...
I went by the Botanical gardens and took about a dozen cuttings of the Striped Bamboo, some already had roots! So I will have nice little plants come shipping time.
To bed, now:
Kenton
WOW glad we fount Bob ! And all his friends :))Onstead of where's Waldo we have where's Bob as we all know he's in his Jungle his garden jungle is so large we have to find Bob :))
Oh critter..they are plumpers LOL..so it is nothing to send you some :) Not to worry about trading. I will simply add it to your wishlist and pull some out :) Dont' worry :) He just loves to share.
Kenton...Chris said he will keep an eye out but that he believes that is a runner...Runners are HARD to come by in FL because they can be invasive..But we have four bamboo dealers going so we will see what we can do and I will also keep the price range in mind :) We will do our best :)
And thanks on the Painted :) I am sure chris will LOVE it :)
Thanks, Lorry! Thanks, Chris!! I'd much rather watch a little one grow from a pup (or a plumper?) than pay $60 for one at Dutch Plant Farm on the next (rare) occasion they get them in! BTW, we're talking about a palm-type palm, right? Because I also have something that they called a "Fish Tail Palm" but it has a very different growth habit from "real" Fish Tail Palms... mine has a stalk, almost like corn or bamboo, with rings where previous leaves have dropped off. It's never produced any divisions, but it occasionally flowers and produces little round "seeds" that I've never tried to germinate.
Bob, I'm afraid the "where's Bob?" thread has become a conversation about jungle plants!
jsounds tgood to me...since my very small jungle...50 x 80 ft...is loaded...he he...nice to have such caring friends..
Oh good! He's alive, folks!
LOL I I meant a clumper critter...Which means it shoots off babies from its base :) So there are always some to share :) or you can let them grow in a big mound :) I will add it to the wishlist just so I remember to send them with your AVS :)
60.00 unless it is HUGE is crazy! I can get them here..small ..VERY cheaply :) SO no I would MUCH rather send ya one :)
Erm Now that I dont' know Critter..I would have to ask Chris...But I believe it is a real palm ...it is in all the palm books..but I was not aware that there was another plant by that name.

This is a photo of the type we have..if that helps
Yes! That's just the one I was looking for! I'll have to take a picture of mine, and maybe you or Chris will know what it is... it sure isn't a real palm.
Aha! I found it by searching PF for "Fishtail"
http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/54939/index.html
isn't PlantFiles great?? like with our sticky -- I should learn to check there first!
Lorry Beautiful Palms :)) And a {alm named after Bob !!
I never knew there were so many palms Lorry and so beautiful ! No wonder Chris loves them so :))
umm... a palm named after Bob? If you mean "Palmbob," that's one of our fellow DGers!
I canNOT get obsessed with palms... It's too cold up here, and they are too big to keep many in the house! LOL
Oh no no that is not what we have :) We have the palm :) and Chris is
ALL excited to share!
and YES plantfiles is AWESOME :) I use it so often!
Oh Allison...you would not believe how many there are :) He actually has a palm called a red sealing wax...the trunks are a VIBRANT red :) though they can't go below 60 degrees so he has to take it in! Lord knows what we will do when it is huge!

I have a suggestion Lorry - why don't we all chip in so we can all win the power ball - or whatever lotto will pay out the most- you know, like a couple of hundred million dollars.... then we can buy a huge house that has multiple green houses and a huge conservatory!! Nothing too big - just with enough wings for each of us...
Sound good?
please don't pinch me, cause I'm really liking this dream
Only if Brad Pitt can come over!
