CritterO...Gunda WHO???

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Here's a pic of our most recent questionable AV.

I think mine is more to the fuschia shades than the light pink shade??

I'll try and get a better pic of the blossoms and leaves..

I'll bet no one told it what color it is supposed to be. It looks light pink to me, but I'm a male! Who's the ruffle in the background?

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Oh that pretty ruffled beauty is my Ness's Fantasy Gold.
It is just now setting some blooms and I'm waiting to see them.
The Gunda Who plant is a mystery CritteO & I traded a while back, both of ours are bloming & it does not match the name & description sent with it. I bought a batch of Rob's leaves off ebay back a year or so and this was a trailer I got.. It isn't blue that's for sure..lol

Maybe they just Sported MsC
Is it on the Registered Sport list ?

Mt Zion, IL(Zone 5b)

Possibly Rob's "Wooloomooloo" or "Lily Pily" maybe?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Sporting from blue to pink seems unlikely?

We're debating as to whether it might be another Rob's variety... 'Lily Pily' is out because there's no fantasy, but what about..

Rob's Sailor Bill (9295) 11/21/2003 (R. Robinson) Semidouble-double light rose-pink pansy/darker eye. Medium green, pointed. Semiminiature trailer

Rob's Sticky Wicket (6467) 01/27/1987 (R. Robinson) Semidouble light fuchsia. Medium green, pointed. Semiminiature trailer

Rob's Wooloomooloo (8074) 03/05/1994 (R. Robinson) Double bright pink sticktite. Medium green, plain, pointed. Semiminiature trailer

I'm leaning toward 'Sticky Wicket' at the moment.... maybe my other 'Sticky Wicket' will bloom soon, and then I can compare them.

Here's the photo of 'Sticky Wicket' from FC:

And here's a photo of my "Gundar Who?" with blooms just opening.

These photos & descriptions show again the problems with trying to identify AVs by bloom color, LOL!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Hey, I wanted to be sure to add the same thing I told MsC when these rose-pink blooms opened... I love this little plant! I'm so glad she shared it with me, whether or not it turned out to be what it "should be."

Has anyone else had a problem with AVs from Cedar Creek not blooming true, or did MsC just get a mixed up order from them?

Many sellers guarantee their plants to be true to type... I wonder if MsC has emailed him about this?

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Interesting dilemma for sure..lol

Yes, I think it is very possible that it sported..Rob's variety certainly has the habit of doing that. I think it is more likely it was mislabled by mistake.

I haven't contacted the seller yet and probable won't, it has been over a year and I'm not sure it is all that important. It does make me wonder about the seller because of the leaves I purchased only 1of the 3 in the batch that lived bloomed true...that's kinda hard to dismiss.
At any rate it is a blooming fool and very pretty.

MsC

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

If you contact the seller, he may be able to ID the ones that didn't bloom true, in case it was a question of mixed labels rather than sports or noids. Also, I think that's the sort of thing I'd want to know about if I were selling plants.

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

I'll contact him and see what he can offer.
I've purchased plants from him before and don't think he will mind . I'll let you know what info I get in return.

Mann I can't get on and then it comes up page can't be displayed. ...Then I just have to try to get on again sometimes can most time can't.
But i'm glad my posting of blue to pink and pink to blue Sports can happen and does posted :))
Many plant all colors Sport to white too ! There is no limit to what a Sport wants to do. It's all up to God :))

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Thanks Allsion,
I got a reply back from the seller and he confirms our thoughts about it sporting. He said they have to detroy several plants of Rob's varieties becasue they sport so easily and can't be sold as a named variety.

I'm pretty sure mine has sported and may even be different than CritterO's plant. lol

Mine is pretty and a blooming fool so I'll keep it as "Gunda Who??"
That's the good & bad side of Av's and why we have so many different ones, too.

**** I'm still having trouble getting on & going anywhere so you're not alone...lol

MsC

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

I am having a lot of trouble getting on and staying on lol
I feel Sprots are fun and give some exciting colors !
Not good for show and selling. But interesting to own and then you can grow them out three generations and meet requierments and register them :))
I love ones that Sport to a Chimera. . They say one in every hundred leaves put down Sport, i have heard it said if you buy enough fantasys av's you might get a Chimera !

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Allison, I had no idea the color changes could be so radical when plants sported! Thanks for the fun list of examples!

In case my 'Rob's Gundaroo' sport is different, maybe I'll call it "Guessaroo noid".... I'm sure my "Humpty Who noid" is the same as MsC's, though, because she sent me a nice crown cutting, thinking it was a chimera....

Here's one that looks like Humpty Who too... I grew it from a leaf of a 'Rob's Humpty Doo' that I got in another trade... First blooms! Isn't it adorable??

Thumbnail by critterologist
The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

It's enough to make ya shake your head that for sure!
I thought I was going color blind...lol

It is hard enough to tell a blue flower from a purple flower and pink and fuschia apart...then they go and sport on you too! Gesshhhh amazing lil rascals aren't they???

MsC

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

Oooh but so pretty! I love them all and I think the sports are really interesting.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Oh April ! Nice to see you :))
I think the Sports are so interesting too !
I will be getting a Blue Boy plant this Spring and to hope it may Sport me a Pink Girl :))

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

But- correct me if I am wrong, not all will sport; even if you have an AV that sported it doesn't necessarily mean that if I have the same original AV that it will sport? Is that correct?

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

So I have a question, is this one a chimera? It 'looks' chimer-ish (is that a word)

Could this plant have 'sported' itself into a chimera? (sorry to sound so dumb)

Thumbnail by begoniacrazii
Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Here's the whole enchilada

That bloom looks like Chimera. You have to have most blooms Chimera. Tyr rooting by lead and sucker see what bllooms true/ All Chimeras are Sport /Muntants ( SP)

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Sticky :))
Chimera: Spontaneous mutation which creates a distinctive bloom pattern called pinwheel. This bloom characteristic is genetically unstable, though it can sometimes be reproduced from peduncle cuttings. Leaf cuttings will not reproduce a chimer
Mutation: Describes an African Violet or part of an African Violet which exhibits physical characteristics indicative of a genetic change in that variety. The genetic change may either be induced, as occurred during the Space Violet program, or it may be spontaneous, which simply means that the cause of the change is unknown. When propagating by leaf, approximately one out of every 100 leaves will produce a mutation

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I think somebody explained to me that the "pinwheel" in a chimera bloom extends all the way to the edge of the petals... so that little edge of purple around the whole petal could mean it's not actually a chimera, which would be good news since it would mean easier propagation of this gorgeous plant!

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Yes... see how the white pinwheel extends all the way to the edge of the petal? Actually, I see one petal where that may not be true, at 6 o'clock on the second photo, but I don't see the sort of purple edge that was on begonia's flower. As I said, I see that as a good thing -- begonia's lovely can perhaps be propagated by leaf and produce these wonderful chimera-ish blooms!

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Exotic Star (9092) 01/12/2002 (D. Thompson) Single chimera white sticktite frilled star/purple stripe. Medium green, plain, quilted, wavy, scalloped. Standard

Same is true of the pink pinwheel on Cherry Bomb... extends all the way to the edge of the petal.
