blackening leaves...

San Francisco, CA(Zone 10b)

Hi all -

For the last couple of years my MG in a 1/2 wine barrel has grown prolifically, but the leaves all slowly turn black and eventually die. I thought it might be because it was sharing the barrel with a leptospermum (tea tree) - but I removed that a few months ago and they are still blackening and dying. Any ideas what's happening?

are you fertilizing them??? i know too much fertilizer will cause them to turn black. i use miracle grow on them like once a week.

maybe its the actual barrel. i used to use barrels like that on my plants but they just never did good in them. could never figure out why but just didnt.
i think its the wine residue in the barrels or how they treat the barrels water proofing them .

maybe someone else can help you better.

It is possible that something from the wood could be affecting your MG's. Have you had any other type of plant in the barrel and is it affected the same way? Have you tried changing out the soil in the barrel and if so do you still have the blackening on your MG's? Good luck and hope you get the problem solved.

Good idea about changing the soil - I'll try that. Was not fertilizing, and no other plants in the soil had that problem, but who knows. I'll also try some other MGs in a different kind of planter all together and see how they do.

Thanks!

Hi qs,
I'm wondering if the MG you are describing is a perennial type that eventually had the blackening problem or are you describing an experience with an annual species...

Hi Ron -

It's a blue Ipomoea purpurea - supposedly an annual, but here in zone 10 many 'annuals' are actually perennials...and this variety grows all over san francisco (except, apparently, in my wine barrel) all year long without dying back.

best,
stefan
