Purple fountain grass

Wilmington, NC

I have dwarf purple fountain grass... (Dwarf pennisetum rubrum, "setaceum purpureum compactum")

There has been several debates, and the websites Ive discovered state "certain cultivars generally do not set seed"

Several people are requesting the seeds from the plumes... and I have lots to share.... but are they sterile!? I dont want to ship seeds that wont produce!

nicole_in_nc, When in doubt try em out! Try putting a few between damp papertowels and keep damp for a few days. See if any sprout. If they are viable you will know that and can send them on out and feel great anout sharing them and if not you can avoid the wasted postage and disapointments!

I would love to give them a try. Also there is a Instant Smoke Plus SEED PRIMER that perhaps could help as well. You can obtain it from seedman.com

I would be more than happy to send you a self address postage envelope and try it. Please provide your address to my e-mail address. cathyreay@att.net

Nicole ~ Don't mean to be a downer here but ~ chances are the seeds are sterile. I've tried pennisetum rubrum several times my self and zilch for germination. Pennisetum setaceum will have viable seeds but the hybrids usually don't - and if they happen to be fertile chances are the plant won't come true and will revert back to the species.
