This is a great time to do any shrub because the they are dormant. You don't have to worry about your cutting being too green. Often in the warmer months the higher temps seem to promote rot. I've done roses, bridal wreath, crepe myrtle, camelia, azalea, mulberry this time of the year with much better results.

I would think they would do well too. I am thinking of asking a neighbor for a forsythia branch and I want to try the snowball bush too. I put 7 to 10 cuttings in a 4 inch pot to save space in the house. Then when it's safe outdoors I pot them separately until large enough to plant out. You might consider doing plenty so you'll have stuff to trade. It worked great for me last year.

I would think you could do semi or hardwood from buddliea right now. I usually root the green ones in spring or summer. They are quick to root then and I keep a better eye on them because they are with lots of other stuff. When I was at my other house, I grabbed some cuttings off my fantail willow, climbing rose and pyracantha. If they don't root, it will be okay, but I hope they will.

Anybody ever root Magnolia?

Porterfield, WI(Zone 4b)

When you guys do this now do you provide any type of environment to keep the moisture level high?? Or are you just putting them in pots and placing in the house? I would think the heating would dry them too much. Legit

legit,
i am doing mine in a cold frame no heat at all unless the sun hits it,and seeing what i can get to root that way but you do have to check on them to make(if the sun hits it) sure they dont dry out but i have mine in baggies.

Moss Point, MS(Zone 8b)

You need plastic bags in the house because of the heat. You also need to watch that if the sun hits it that it doesn't overheat. I don't think you'd need a baggie in a cold frame.

Badseed, I don't know anybody ever trying to root magnolias. They come up wild from birds scattering the seeds here. I lost my magnolia to hurricane katrina and now is a good time to find a small one in the woods. Thanks for the reminder. See if you can get someone to send you some seed pods this summer.

twiggy,
i have them in bads so the mice wont eat them even though they will have to chew the bag first to get them, so i thought i would try it that way and see, mine dont get that much sun so i know it dont heat up thxs
