Do they need alot of sun?

A friend of mine has good luck with hers in partial shade. I used to grow one at my old house and it never seemed very picky.

We see them along riverbanks fighting w/ tag alder. Some nice cultivars out there mixed orangey-red also. Pretty adaptable plant. I"ve cut leaders off both red and yellow b4 budbreak brought them inside and they started roots in pondwater, then transplant when frost out yielding about 40% catch. Ken

Kandlmidd...I need more explaination...do you mean you cut the stems in late winter and root them and then transplant while there is still frost? I have never done any cuttings (of anything!)

Hi levilyla! I've got six red-twigs at the top of a small terraced shade garden with hostas and various shade loving plants and ground covers. This area is shaded by oaks and maples and pines with less than four hours of filtered sun hitting the dogwoods. They are doing real good and this year will be the fourth year. These were rooted along with cork-screw and pussy willows which are also doing great !.......Dave

Red and yellow d's can get pretty leggy if you let them go. Natural like. Some people wack them off at about 6" in late winter and they grow more formal like, sort of like a clump grass. They believe that this pruning intenseifies the color as an added benefit. Mine tend to get leggy fighting for some sunlight. When I trim them back before bud break, I take the end shoots that I've cut off and put them into a 5gal plastic pail w/ pond water( only because my well water is hard) and I put this pail in the basement where it gets a little east sun. Leaves will form on buds above waterlevel and little white rootlets on those under water. When frost is out of the ground outside and soil can be worked, I have put them in a non-competitive location and achieved about 40% success with just a little watering. Ken
