Aha! Like a venus flytrap, Kylee's been sucked into the Violet Forum via the old fashioned Bait & Switch. Don't you like African violets, friend?
Kenton
O/T Uh Oh.. I'm in trouble now. Look what Keyring started!

Is this what you want Laurie?

I will be looking today :)
Hi Kylee,
The ping/butterwort and the sundews are great at catching fungus gnats. The others mostly prefer other types of food. The sundew requires more humidity than the ping, which means that the ping is happy next to an AV wherever you live, but the sundew will only work if you have a lot of humidity.
LOL @ Kenton!!!!! Oh yes, I do like AVs, and used to grow them when I was in college. Then I got married and I killed them. LOL. They aren't my favorites, but I DO now have a Streptocarpella, which I do NOT want to kill, but from what I understand, they are a little easier.
Ping........that's the name of them? Why haven't I heard of these before? Wait, don't answer that. There's a whole WORLD of plants I've never heard of, I'm sure! Oh, this is FUN! :-)
Kylee
my new ping is currently dining on about half a dozen fungus gnats! Go get em ping!!!!
Oh man, late to the party, but yes you started it all, I bought 2! but it took forever to find them!
Yes, where is a good place to get these pings?
I have no idea Kb..I bought mine at gardenfest yesterday
And Allison I picked up two for you today also :)
try checking gardenwatchdog for carnivorous plant sources in your area. Also keep an eye out for them at plant sales and at the box stores. If all else fails, order online (eg california carnivores - and there are other sources), or see if someone has babies to trade. And don't forget to check out the carnivorous forum here at dg.
It's a miracle that I still only have one of these things ;-)
Well after searching and searching and wearing my poor fingers to the bone I then had to compare one to another, prices, etc. Some sold expensive plants, some cutivars that I could not find pictures for, ( I like to know what I am buying), and others were "creepy" and that's an understatement! I am not sure why- it's been a few weeks, but this is the site I bought from http://www.carnivorousplantnursery.com
I did not buy the large plant and they did send me a freebie, but you have to be careful, these plants are small in the begining so the freebie is small, but hey I am ok w/ that.
Thank much Lorry ! You must have gone early. I'm just waking having a cup of coffee. lol
April that is a very interesting nursery. And ok you guys people buy bugs to feed their plants ?
Oh my. Last year I got gnats bad drove me crazy. Hubby sprayig and those long yellow things filling up. Now I see a few here and there but I don't want any so it's humid here and I hope they will be hungry and find enough food.
LOL..you may need more for those expolosions :)
and yes..some people buy bugs to feed them...If you have a carnivorous garden :) You would need to!
I am actually sorta getting into them...they are way cool :)
So I may want a couple more if I can keep these living!
Woohoooo! A DG buddy of mine just offered me a baby ping in spring! She is having good luck (so far) propagating them, so my fingers are crossed! I'm going to buy a few pitcher plants for a mini bog this spring, also. :-)
See what you've gone and started Key! Pretty soon we'll all have our own little shops of horror!! he he he...
Oh no, Critter, I haven's seen that one to sing a song from it, can you?
Little shop, Little shop of horrors, hum, hum - whistle, whistle..
"FEEEED me, Seymour! Feed me NOW!"... "Feed me allll night long!"
"Someone like Seymour.... Standing beside me..."
I'm afraid I go to "hum, hum - whistle, whistle" pretty quickly on these... but anyone who hasn't seen it definitely should!
Well critter..One of the butterworts I bought has 6 babies in there! They seem to pup out :) So I doubt they are too hard to propagated :)
I also found a really cool site which sells them very cheaply..so if I have luck with these..I may buy more and will always be willing to share with friends :)
Please share the link to the site! :-)
I've heard good things about Sarracenia Northwest, http://www.cobraplant.com/
and about Dangerous Plants, http://www.dangerousplants.com/
I love the name of that second place! LOL
Hirt's has pings for $8 buy it now on eBay - that's what I paid for mine locally (ebay item 7742385989)
Ive ordered from them before with good luck.
What about us Canadians??/ Any sites that you know of where I can get one...cheap???
Those look like the pings I paid 5.00 for at Gardenfest though the blooms have not opened up yet..so I can't be sure.
Here is a link to one I found pretty cheap

Look what I found!!! I never knew this...sundews native to Long Island!
The headwaters of the Peconic River arise near Brookhaven National Laboratory and the community of Ridge in the heart of the central Long Island Pine Barrens. The river flows in a west-to-east direction past the town of Riverhead and enters into Flanders Bay, a distance of about 19 kilometers (12 miles). The pine barrens in this area extend in a broad belt several miles wide north, south, and west of the river. Throughout most of its length, the Peconic River is a rather warm, slow-moving, naturally acidic, and nutrient-poor freshwater stream ecosystem, having a large area of ponded water in its course. In its upper reaches the river has a wilderness character, and is bordered by marshes dominated by such species as water willow (Decodon verticillatus), blunt manna-grass (Glyceria obtusa), tussock sedge (Carex stricta), and bluejoint grass (Calamagrostis canadensis), as well as red maple (Acer rubrum) and Atlantic white cedar (Chamaecyparis thyoides) swamps, upland forests of pitch pine (Pinus rigida) and white oak (Quercus alba), and a small number of houses. In this headwater area the river is generally very narrow, meandering, heavily vegetated, and bordered with a variety of bog plant species, including leatherleaf (Chamaedaphne calyculata), pitcher plant (Sarracenia purpurea), round-leaf sundew (Drosera rotundifolia), and several species of peat mosses (Sphagnum spp.). Further downstream, commercial and residential development increases as the river approaches the town of Riverhead. The watershed is approximately 194 square kilometers (75 square miles), with an annual average discharge of 1 cubic meter per second (37 cubic feet per second), and water temperatures from 0 to near 30°C (32 to 80°F). The year-round groundwater flows are correlated to the seasonal precipitation.
WOW very interesting Anita ! Thanks for sharing this info.
When I bought mine the nursery owner said they were native to New Jersey! go figure!
Wow so much new information. hey are fasicantating. So happy Keyring started this thread and Lorry so kind to get me a couple :))
No problem hun :)...They are happily waiting in your box :) I want it to warm up then gonna send what I have now for ya :)
Yes they just said get ready for the coldest weather this winter. I think we may be breaking some cold records. I think we are a little bit colder than you ? No rush shipping you know how slow I am.
I dont' know..but it is 48 degrees right now *shiver*
The carnivorous plants go dormant in the cold *laugh* so want to wait til it warms up just a tiny bit more!
Perhaps one weekend I can beg Chris to take me to that side to see ya :) Hehe and can deliver a package in person! We love to travel all over the state! Are you north or south of tampa?
Were North of Tampa. were about 4 miles from the gulf. Kinda North West of Tampa :))
We are about 3 hours straight east of tampa...same latitude...:)
You guys had better get rid of that cold weather before we get down there Feb. 21-28, you hear? LOL
Kylee
Hi Kylee
It's pouring cold rain now. Maybe some parts northern Fl get snow. lol Sunday night to Monday is going to be the wrost and Monday won't even warm up.
I sure hope it gets warm for you. Are you coming for vacation ?
I know Laurie is coming to Florida for a Begonia Convention !
It needs to be warm so she can put her top down !
Yes, we're taking my grandma down to where she used to stay in the winter for over 40 years (Bradenton). She's 91 and they're going to destroy the park where she lived (my aunt and uncle are there now) and she wants to see it one more time before they demolish it. Also, she has a good friend there that's really sick and she wants to see her.
Kylee
91 year old wow . And she's even up to a long drive ! I hope the weather is real nice for you and you have a pleasant fun visit to Florida !
No, I don't think she could handle a drive for that long. We're flying. They'll take her by wheelchair when we get our connecting flight in Atlanta. She wouldn't go unless we could do that. She can walk pretty well, but she's very slow and can't do long distances.
I hope we have good weather. I'll be looking for a ping while we're down there, to bring home! I imagine they might be easier to find down there than here.
Oh that's good flying ! Have fun !
Oh my goodness! That doesn't even look like the same plant!
I didn't find any pings in Florida, by the way... :-(
