O/T Uh Oh.. I'm in trouble now. Look what Keyring started!

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

After seeing Keyring's Ping, I had to take a field trip!

This is just incredible.
Where would I get one of these Pings?
How do you feed it?
How quickly can I get it HERE!
LOL

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

correction, this is not OT. These things are great fungus gnat catchers. While fungus gnats - in small populations - are a relatively minor problem, they are a virus vector. And virus is something to avoid at all costs. So ... pings are a necessity for any responsible indoor or greenhouse grower! follow my logic?

There are a few sources in the US - check gardenwatchdog under carnivorous.

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

The plant you posted..I found the site in your other thread..it looks like they ship.
I need to have one of these...Is it
http://www.californiacarnivores.com/cart/Drosera_capillaris-lg.jpg
This one?
I have fruit flies a lot and this would be a great thing to have around the house.

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

I was told to foliar mist it with orchid food, but at 1/2 or 1/3 strength. The soild blend they use is interesting. 1/3 peat, 1/3 vermiculite and 1/3 perlite. No nutirients to speak of. In the winter, it would be their dormant (lose leaves) cycle and in the summer growing season, I'm supposed to put it in a dish of water. (I would think with weak fertilizer too)
Dont the flowers remind you of a strep? He does mail order. So just give him a call, tell him the begonia nut sent you. You may want to wait, their sale stock was low. Here's a shot of my tiny baby.

Key is right, in fact they were often used in the Victorian era in hot houses to combat the fungi gnati problem! Note that mine is already at work. Looks like gnat for breakfast!

LOL, Lorry, spoken like a true addict!! "How quickly can I get it HERE!"

I don't have a huge fungus gnat issue, but do see them everyday. I have lots of sticky yellow paper everywhere. (gross)
but there are some warmer days when I feel like pigpen. Little gnats hovering over my head.

photo taken from the internet (I know it's a no-no, but...I couldn't help myself) C. Schultz live 30 minutes from here. His skating rink is still in Santa Rosa.

LOL..we have some fungus gnats but we have fruit flies just about year round!
Hubby gave me the go ahead and I am definitely going to be buying from them.
I was just wondering how hard it was to keep them alive!
Do you need to suppliment their diet? Or do they do alright on their own?

I have orchids so have orchid fertilizer right here for them...so that will work!

I may need to get a book though to make sure I know what I am doing!

And will try to refrain until they have more in stock!

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

generally they don't absorb nutrition from their roots. They get most of the food from the bugs they catch, but a supplemental foliar feed is good. Don't over fertilize, especially during the slow season. I actually haven't foliar fed mine at all, but I've only had it less than a year. This being my first ping, can't say that I have anything other than booksmarts (if that) about them....

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

you're asking me? I haven't a clue! Guess we'll have to hang out in the Man eating plant forum for a while. I think when you order, just ask Peter, he's the owner/guru of the place. Nice fella too!

Tell ya what, just before I come to Miami, I'll take a drive over there and hand pick what you want from their availaiblity and bring it myself! Can you wait about 5 weeks?

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

LOL..it would be a tough job but I am sure I could wait! But wouldn't it be hard for you to carry them?? I dont' want to put you out at all :)
Actually Chris and I already picked out three we want :) and that was hard because we both wanted them ALL! But I should start with three and see if I can keep them alive...He said he will spring for all three we want...so he is worse then me! I would start with one!

If you don't think it would be too much trouble to pack them..and you are going that way anyhow..I will take you up on that though! I can send you a check!

Oh and don't forget...we have a date for fairchild. You will go crazy! They have begonias EVERYWHERE!!!!!!!

Oh and...did you see my comment about the Rex (I think) Begonias our local nursery has?
I was wondering if you wanted me to pick some up for you,.

They all had green foliage I believe but BEAUTIFUL bloom colors...one was yellow with like peach tips to the blooms, they had red and some other colors.
I believe they were like 4.88 a piece...I definitely thought of you when I saw them!

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

I'll wait in the begonias, but thanks for the offer. (wait, did I just say I'd wait? Hmm that's a first! LOL)- It's just that I'd hate to see you go through the effort if I may have them already.

I dont think it will be a problem bringing them- I'm a light traveler. That way I can pick out some nice ones. Be sure to see if they have them available. Mine was $8.62 for one. not the cheapest, but well, heck I've paid more for a begonia before.

And it's always cool to visit Sebastopo. It's only a half hour from the coast, so we go through there all the time on our way to Bodega. My best friend and I treat ourselves to the best clam chowder and glass of white wine about once a month over there. It's second to none!

Plus there are some outstanding nurseries too! Always fun! Oh I haven't forgotten the date. Hoping Bob joins us too. I can't wait. all I do is dream of Miami. We'll have to talk as the time nears, I don't know what kind of clothes to bring for the weather. March 1st, will it be warm?

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

lorry think those are the reiger begonias?...3 for 12.00...something like that?...back by the av's and gloxinias?....

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Yup :) So they are Reiger begonias :) LOL shows how much I know :)
Thanks Bob :)

Ok Laurie! I would appreicate it and as the time approaches..I will see what they have available and send you out a check.

You are so sweet to do this for me :) I do appreciate it!

Oh and let me know if you chaneg your mind now that you know the right name for the begonias LOL

I finally learned what FC is!! And have to order it realllll sooooon!!!

Thanks.

Sanna

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Oh, I'll pass on the reigers, we have them here, I have one in my ghse blooming. They're kinda tough for me. I generally looked at them like a bouquet, knowing that I'd kill it sooner or later. But one has survived.

I don't mind - we'll just catch up when I get to Miami. Do you know what you want? only Pings?

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

O/T = off topic, since we aren't really talking about African Violets and their kin. We tend to get off topic easily here. LOL

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Dionaea muscipula
'Red Dragon'

One of the red sundews...doesn't matter which one LOL
whatever they have available at the time!
D. capillaris or D. capillaris or D. slackii

Pings
P. laueanna
or
P. x sethos

So basically one of everything LOL

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

ok, so about a week before, bug me or else my soggy brain might get caught up in the 'getting ready to go' and forget.
I have to leave lists for DH anytime I go away so he knows who gets watered, don't forget to feed the fish (chickens, horses, dogs cats etc). When I was in China he took care of everything for like 3 weeks! Anyway, sometimes I get so busy doing that that I forget to do important things.

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

LoL ok hun..I will remind ya! and thanks again!

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Ok Laurie..I dont' need you to pick these up ..I got a BARGAIN at gardenfest!
LOL...5.00 a piece! venus fly traps, sundews and the butterworts :)
I can pick some up for you or you Keyring if you want some :)
LOL I emailed Kenton..I thought he was the one into these! I could pick them up for him too though :)
We are heading back tomorrow...so just send me a shopping list if there is anything you want!
Here are the aweful photos I took of the two I bought.
I am buying a purple venus tomorrow :)

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Yup they do..the guys says they love to be in AV conditions!
No fertilizers though!
What kind do you want hun?
the flowering one is a butterwort...the pinkish one is a sundew.
They also have venus fly traps...*purple varieties and green varieties*
They are TOO cute! and they guys says lots of AV people use them for this purpose!
They like to be VERY wet though :)
So I will pop whatever kind you want into your next box...:) Just let me know what tickles your fancy!
Oh and they also have pitcher plants..not so much my thing.

Ok so you want the two I posted photos of? or did you want different ones?
The green one with the flower is a florida native :) and any and all of them are carnivorous so will eat up any gnats around!
I can pick them up for you..they are only 5.00 a piece so..no worries hun..You have sent me more then I could ever repay you for anyhow :)

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

not only that, but they propagate by leaf (see the carnivorous forum for equilibrium's pics) kinda like AVs.

Thanks for offering to pick some up for me, but I'm going to hold off on new carnivorous for the moment. I have too many seedlings etc and am just not keeping up.....

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Lorry you pick out two pretties that will eat gnats that you like and I know I will like them :))
And you have more than repayed me I have so much more I want to give you ! You deserve it you have been a kind share person :))

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

PS I love the ones with color in the foliage if they eat gnats :))

Abilene, TX

I was SO excited about this, so I went to the website. EEWWWWW.....................Yucky. Me no likey. Too weird. Creeps me out. Kind of like insects or something. I'd be scared to have those on the kitchen windowsill. It might grab me while I'm doing dishes. (And right now I am trying to figure what is running around in one of my walls at night, anyway.) Yeah, go ahead and say it. I'm a wimp. : )

But, have fun and tell us how it goes. Pictures, too. : )

Abilene, TX

Hey guys, really didn't think too much before I sent that last post. No offense, really. I'm just so squeemish, I don't even cut up my own chicken. Hope I was not offensive. : ( Sorry

Well, I mean I cut up my own chicken at a meal (HA!), but I don't buy anything but boneless, skinless chicken. : ) Bought a whole chicken once...............that was enough.

Don't watch that steve martin movie with Seymor, Little Shop of Horrors! They're cute in person!

Abilene, TX

Thanks, I won't. I don't do horror movies, either. Too creepy. Give me a good mystery any day. : ) I went to King Kong with my son, and kept my hands over my eyes through all the bug stuff. I didn't know that was going to happen.

OK, sorry for the sidetrack. I need to get some neem oil and sticky traps. : ) No carnivores for me. I do still have gnats, but very few. Until I get the neem oil, I am gonna use the murphy's oil soap again.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

I hate bugs too HP. Any bugs dead or alive hubby has to take care of. And I onlt eat boneless chiken too ! And well cooked.
But I hate gnats so they'll eat my gnats lol but you never know it could grow real big and eat me lol :))

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Ok Allison :) Since you like mine..I will get you two like them :)
and yup that is called a sundew and it does eat gnats..they stick to the lil red hairs on the leaves :)

And no problem Keyring..I can relate to that :)

LOL ..Pam..no offense taken :)

So Laurie..did you want me to pick you some up also? I can just bring them to ya when you visit :)

I made the little shop of horrors joke at dinner LOL...so We all think alike :)

I am going to also pick up the venus fly trap tomorrow :) the purple one is WAY cool!

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

oh thank you Lorry, I'm going to pass. I can get so many different ones from the nursery just over the hill (California Carnavores). But thanks again for the offer. Plus, think of all the begonias and AV's I'll be bringing home! Gotta save room in the suitcase.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Lorry what's the purple one like ?

Drumheller, Alberta, Canada(Zone 3a)

What is the exact name of the very first plant in this post ??? I really like the look of it. Very cool. I couldn't find it on the site.

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

Okay, let me get this right....if I have one or two of these plants, it will attract my fungus gnats and help with getting rid of them? I don't have a huge problem, but they're always there. This seems too good to be true. A new plant, it's attractive, and it eats bugs?

Kylee
