Red Hot Pokers-Take them away

San Diego, CA(Zone 10a)

I finally divided the poker. If you live close enough to pick them up, you are welcome to them. No mail order lol. I have enough of those to get out. Over due trades that folks have been very patient about. DH just got home and is shaking his head over the amount of Red Hot Pokers lying about. If you want some, drop me a line

I'm starting some of these from seed this year. I wish I were close enough to pick some up because I think they will take some time to grow to flowering size from seed. The plants must like it where you are. I was wondering how they do in California because I've never seen anyone here growing them.

They are just about weeds. Do you ever get to Napa? I can pot you some up and send them with Dad in April. He has some of mine and they are doing beautifully. Mine were started from a corm about 5 years ago and have now been spread all over. I took one to Pudgie in Stockton a couple of years ago and it bloomed the first year for her.

I don't often get to Napa. It's great fun when I do, though. Thanks for thinking of me.

What did your garden look like with lots of these Red Hot Pokers?
Is this what you are talking about?

These are something you could make into a large patch somewhere.,, in a part of your property... no?
I have a hill and have a region of these... that have been there for years...
maybe 80 flower blooms in the right season...
they grow so close together... they need to be thinned...
eeks...

Those are the ones. They just keep getting bigger and bigger. I dig them out every couple of years to thin them. I have no clue how big it would really get. This plant put out 30 stalks at a time last year. I have moved it to a place in the garden where it can have a bit more room now.

If you have them in an out of the way area, I would leave them be. The root system is fairly shallow and they would make a great run off deterent. I'll bet they are gorgeous when they bloom. If I had a hill, I would have lots and lots of pokers on it. They are so low matainence and give you lots of beauty for very little effort.

That is so pretty, amisun. I hope my seeds sprout for me. I've only seen the plants once in a nursery and they put them out at the end of the summer when the blooms were just about done. I wanted to get them put in the ground in the spring.

Do these stay green year round? I have six small ones in pots i am ready to transplant.

Hi shovelmonkey,

Yes, they stay green all year long, just like the agapanthus in our areas does. Just make sure you give them plenty of room to stretch their leaves. Frogs gave me some of hers a few years ago, and they have mulitplied already.

BTW, did you get my dmail?

I have a couple in pots I should plant as soon as it stops raining, LOL, I just love the way they look!
