I hear ya Allison!
My two adore each other and it is SOOO cute!
Sly takes care of his stupid sister Carly!
LOL
and he is her barometer...When he gets excited, so does she!
It is a delight to watch them playing together!
Precious got very depressed when her sister died. It took her almost two months to get over her death.
well allison she's doing great now...she's a very "precious" member of your family..
In a family of 5 dogs, it's interesting to see who is Alpha (top dawg). Biscuit was the undisputed QUEEN! No one messed around with her. She was an Akita/Chow/Lab blend or so we guess. Had a purple polka-dotted tongue like a chow. But bad hips like a poorly bred lab. So at 9 months I had her first hip surgery, then the other a few years later. She got 15 good years out of her bad hips and it was painfull for her. I was diligent about her meds and all my gals get the finest dog food I can get for them. I make their meals every night. I used to do more, but it gets expensive for 5 dogs.
Second in command was Ellie, but when Biscuit died, a shift happened and now Miss Sophia is in charge, She's the smallest basset, but has the fiestiest personality. Amber is a gentle giant. meek at times but occasionally throws her weight around. and lastly is ol Semi. She's always been on the bottom of the heap. So I give her extra treats, I let her in the living room to have a raw-hide bone that the others would steal from her. I give her extra loves since I know she is in her 'retirement' years.
Since the three bassets were rescue dogs, they all have issues and quirks. It's funny how much they love me out of the whole family. When they hear me stir in the morning, they go wild. If DH gets up before me, they wont even raise their head of the pillow! As soon as they hear my spoon in the coffee cup stir, they go ape for their treats. Pavlovian response for sure!
Bob, I say if your lifestyle allows, adopt if you can. I know there are small dog rescues in Fl. And even breed specific if that's what you want.
I see little breeds here at our local humane society.
I need to bring you there some time Bob! It is the premier one in Fl..Heck most people don't live that good!
They frequently have bassetts and they like! We went big just because those are the ones we fell in love with!
Laurie..i always get my dogs from "society"...county or humane etc...i have had mostly st bernards when i lived in Los Angeles for 28 years...(was on radio and tv there..than western union etc)...but it is too hot for them here...I have had a sheepdog...a part chow/akita..lol...and Happy the doxy....i have been back to the shelter a couple of times and mostly now they have pit bulls and i want no part of those...it will be some kind of a lab i think...they have great personalities..
lorry where is the humane society there?
We do have lots of pits here but tons of other dogs also.
The hunting breeds are popular here
also always see lab/chow mixes that look like our Sly...so of course I want to bring them home!
LOL..so next time you visit..if you want...would love to show you our humane society..there is NOTHING like it..
Even if you aren't looking for a dog now...it is really heart warming to see how lovely our society is!
Two buildings that are so pretty!
lorry..i would love that...the humane society in brevard county leaves a lot to be desired...it's in cocoa
It is on 77th ST...half way between Vero and Sebastian!
It is written up in the papers all the time! They say people come from miles around just to see it!
Allison, can we PLEASE see more Precious puppy pictures, she is so cute!!
I know Bob..that is where Sly comes from..it is a TERRIBLE place!
We went there because they said they had a blood hound..and Chris likes those.
No blood hound but we found our Sly and we both instantly fell in love.
Carly comes from our local humane society.
We even have a full time animal behaviorist *trainer* here...they offer free obedience classes to all adopted dogs...and if they are not adopted, you can join the classes very cleaply.
She also screens all the animals before they are put up for adoption.
So you know what you are getting into.
But seriously..would love to bring you there some time :)
lorry..that would be great..let me know when it's a good time for you...and we can plan it...bob
Weekends always work for us since Chris works late just about every darned day!
