Hi Pam,

Is your greenhouse polycarbonate? Propane and its exhaust can, over time, weaken the polycarbonate making it brittle. Do a search using the terms "propane and polycarbonate". You will get a lot of very scientific studies about it.

How big is your greenhouse?

I have a 9 x 7 and use a forced fan space heater with a portable thermostat. I keep the temps at dont freeze temps, 40 degrees. This is my second year using this system and have yet to have any causalties, even when there is a coating of ice on the inside of the roof! I also painted over 20 2ltr soda bottles black and filled them with water. I make sure that really tender plants are on top of them and the plants on top of bottles actually put on a lot of new growth over the winter.

Hope this helps.

So how long before you have to fill the bottles again? I've never heard of this but if it works then that is great. I am looking into getting a small greenhouse sometime in the future. So I am really interested in what you all have to say.

Jesse, since they are capped, I don't have to refill them. I'm happy to report the same results as last winter concerning plants on top of the bottles. They are doing great and this year I'm even putting seed trays on top of them to see if it speeds up germination. I'll let you know!
