good morning MICHIGANDERS lets yak.....

Melvindale, MI(Zone 5a)

Not much snow here, not even an inch. Weather man said 6 to l2. Wrong again. LOL

Grand Blanc, MI

Not sure how much we got here...news said the area got between 3 and 10 inches. That's quite a spread! I'd guess we got about 4-5 inches but it blew like crazy yesterday. Blew enough to block up roads in Lapeer where I teach so I have a snow day today! Whoo Hoo!!! I can finally catch up on the boards. :-)

AuGres, MI(Zone 5b)

Deann,

You might like Zephirine Drouhin which is a climber with rich bronze-red young shoots and new foliage, followed by strongly fragrant, deep-pink flowers. The best part about Zephirine Drouhin is that it is thornless. You see, roses by nature are not really climbers. They call them climbers but they just grow tall. They don't naturally twist or grab onto structures like you think a climber like honeysuckles would do. You have to train them to the trellis and tie them where you want them. This can get pretty 'picky' if you choose a rose with daggers for thorns. When we moved from our city house the only rose I brought with me was my Zephirine Drouhin. It grows really fast too and will halfway or better cover a trellis in the first year if it likes the soil, sun, water etc. It smells so good too..........like roses used to smell. I won't grow a rose without fragrance. This is an old rose. I believe from the 1800's. If the temps don't get too hot and it gets sufficient watering it will bloom off and on most of the summer.

Another nice climber is Fourth of July. It has red and white striped flowers. It's mildly fragrant. It is not prone to disease like black spot and it won the AARS award some years ago. It was the first time a climber won in over two decades.

Au Gres, MI(Zone 5a)

Loon.......You won't believe this, but I did some research myself right after Christmas, and the Zephirine Drouhin was the one I choose.....But I thought I would toss that question up to some of the folks here in Dave's just to see what they thought......Having seen your gardens, I trust your very good judgement on flowers, so I will probably go with Zephirine......thanks Loon for your input.....I copied this picture of the Zephirine Drouhin rose from Jackson Perkins...

Deanne! Sorry! I just was rereading the posts here trying to find today, and saw yours and other folkses
messages to me saying hi and such. I am a nitwit sometimes. Technologically challanged.

anyhow. Long Island! Oh my Gosh. town of Hempstead, we used to go to the beach there. right by
the little town of Roslyn. you could see the garbage facility from this beach. I don't remember the
name of it, but it sure has grown up. Real fancy now.

I always had a problem with Long Island. I didnt fit. No matter how hard I tried, I failed, miserably.
I am SO glad to be here in Michigan, you have NO idea. I feel so normal here. Absolutely A-1
certifiable normal. In NY I was "fat" but here, after gaining like another 100 lbs, I am normal.
: ) I love to eat and oh my god....bring a dish to pass.....I had no idea people here could cook so
good. I had never in my life been to a "dish to pass" I didnt even know what that meant.
See, I am sure you could understand that. Bringing a dish meant bringing a dish usually from
fortunoffs or A&S.
I can talk to anyone here about my gardens and plants, and EVERYONE here does it.
Also, everyone Birds! Even my dear husband. And other womens husbands too. that was
an eye opener for me. I can go on and on. I still am amazed and charmed by it all.
I have to go watch the Sopranos with Lou right now. He is in amazement that we grew up
next door to all these people in Searingtown, and on my street, DeChiaro Lane in Williston
Park. My parents used to go to the San Su San with everyone. all the time......
more stories, later.

sheri

Morning = hey Swill - did I tell ya that there is a wonderful garden place by you?? It is called Creekside Gardens and is by Middleville. The owner is a former student of mine and I am there allllll the time. They have the best prices around and have senor citizens day on Tues (if you are that age!! LOL) Check them out...another good one is just 2 miles north called Cherry Valley Greenhouse- another nice one...

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

well gooooooooood morning everyone! 19 degrees with a windchill of 9 and snowflakes floating to the ground softly! I could really use 3-4 more inches of snow around here! What we got the other day blew into drifts and left some areas with very little left!

Yesterday I went out to the GH but it was still covered with snow and only in the upper 50s in there! I did sharpen a few hoes and read my mail and then came inside again. 41 more days till spring, im sure glad Feb is the shortest month-seems to be the coldest one always too.

deann thats a beautiful rose. I bought a white climber last fall at warmbiers-snowgoose, we shall see how that one does. I have one in the middle of the bed that keeps getting bigger -may have to move that to a trellis! and a mini red one that is just huge and sprawling

Sheri hello and glad you love it here in Michigan-im freezing! lol

ON A SAD NOTE:
My son called me yesterday with some sad news-that man that shot his wife and himself in front of their teenage son-They were the parents of one of his co-workers and friend at the casino. She is in a world of unbelief right now as is the rest of the family! So so SAD. So maybe some prayers for the family :(

WHAT is everyone up too? starting any seeds? All i have growing right now are dayliliy babies and planted some hosta seeds-dont see any green there yet!

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

I've been a seed starting. Two different kinds of lupine - one is up already. Double decker cone flower = up. Wave petunias and dragonleaf begonia still didn't sprout. Today I put in two different coneflowers = the new ones that are supposedly sterile. We'll see!! Potted up a bunch of coleus cuttings......

This still seems like a longgggg winter. Flakes falling here too = on Thurs we're supposed to get more with winds - they are saying blowing and drifting, but the reliability of their forecasts is not good!! I don't put any faith in them any more!!

Au Gres, MI(Zone 5a)

Dori......I am pretty sure I am gonna get that rose....and what I may do is put Eden on one side and Zephirine Drouhin on the other....

sarv48....your gonna have some full grown plants by the time April or May gets here.....

s.williams.....glad you like Michigan....so do I.....can not imagine ever living on Long Island, its a jungle in New York....whenever I go for a visit, I can't wait to get home....

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

Today is the 15th of Feb. yahoooo so its something like 35 days till its OFFICIALLY spring!!! I made it through winter! :) well amost
They are saying a winter storm(MESS)starting tonight at 10pm. I hope we get at least 3inches to keep the gardens covered for the arctic chill they are saying is coming. The bus driver n the teachers told the kids to pray for a snowday-LOL I guess they need a break!

We got a new computer last weekend so i have no pictures on this one :( but it sure is nice and upto date. But we have to go back to get a cord for the printer-nickledime you to death! why dont they include that in the box?(rolls eyes)

I have been painting garden decorations and fixing stuff for the garden, I should make a few more bowling balls since i have so many still to do.
getting my seeds ready(again) and waiting for a lil sunshine! My daylily seedlings are about ready for their first hair cut.

well i guess i will go read some of the forums and check my other sites, warm the java up again and wait for arliene and pat to sign on AIM

does anyone else have instant message(S) i have MSN and AIM not going to bother with yahoo this time! If you do and want me to add you to my list plez dmail me :)

HAVE A WONDERFUL cold winter sunless day :) (cabin fever)
dori/NOTmartha!

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

Went to the store and got some stuff for the upcoming storm. I have a feeling it may be a good one as I have had a blaring headache for two days!! grrrr I've taken so much aspirin/excedrin -it's a wonder my stomach doesn't have a hole burned in it!!

Dori - did you happen to get a lap top? I am in the market for one and can't decide what I really want. I just want it for email and maybe editing photos - so I don't need a bunch of bells and whistles, but I am computer ignorant. I'll hang on to this old imac until it croaks tho....

spring is coming.....s l o w l y....

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

sue no i ended up with another desktop (HP) i dont go anywhere to need a laptop really! I'd end up with enough dirt in the keyboard to grow a garden if i hauled it outside with me!

You really have to spend $$$ to get a laptop with lots of ram and hard drive....so here i sit at the desk FREEZING tonight-waiting for the storm to arrive~

Au Gres, MI(Zone 5a)

Good Morning Michigan Folks....

Not quit 6am and the snow is coming down.....when I let the dogs out this morning, they did not go too far.....could tell by paw prints....

Dori, Jim and I went into the city yesterday (Saginaw,Bay City) to shop, and get it done, as I knew about this in pending storm. Thank God we did...as I hate to shop in city on a Friday....So will just hunker down now stay warm by the fireplace and just dream about spring....I may just cut a path to my Greenhouse and work in there later if the sun comes out....When daylight comes I will snap some digital, as the snow looks heavy on the trees and it really looks beautiufl out there.....

Deann

Weather gal was wrong here AGAIN!! Just rain.....all those warnings for nothing....wish they were more accurate. Now she's saying - well, maybe this afternoon.... I had all the flashlights all charged up, chili made to put on the woodstove, and candles out.. What a let down!! LOL

Guess I'll go look at my seeds, maybe something sprouted overnight and will make me smile.

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

NO SCHOOL HERE!!! we got rain then snow and now its rainning a tad. The winds are horrible out of the northeast and there is drifting everywhere, its hard to say how much we got becuz it has blown so much.

The boys are still in bed sleeping and im making french toast for them-I slept in till my son called on his way home(every morning)from working at the casino. He said it was pretty slushing on the roads and traffic was moving slow.

now im off to daves chat!!!
warm HUGZ!

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

Thundering, lightning, and raining here!! And the wind is picking up from the east (we can't keep our house warm with an east wind...) If I didn't look outside, it sounds like spring!!

I planted a bunch of seeds this afternoon just so I could smile.

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

thunder lightning(power went out for a tad) and freezing rain here and wind and what a mess- im sure we will have another snow day tomorrow its just horrible i had ato move birdfeeders cuz the branches are bent and touching the ground-loaded with ice and snow!!

GIVE ME SPRING!!

i sat out winter sown iris yesterday-they are in the snowdrift now! lol

Au Gres, MI(Zone 5a)

Hi guys and gals.....5:15 pm here and the weather is weird....snowed, and now heavy thunder and lighting. Raining ice, literally....very very treacherous out there....keeping fingers crossed we don't loose our power, but generators are ready to go if we do.....lots of wood in for the fireplace too....

Deann

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

On the counter I have laid out - two huge flashlights, a three wicked candle with matches, and a radio with charged up batteries. Let's hope I don't need to use them!! Plenty of wood for the woodstove.

Counties south of us are under a tornado watch...now is that crazy or what!!

Only thing that has happened is our satelite dish has flicked off for awhile (I think it is snow on the receiver thing) It came back on since then.

Just crazy....

Glennie, MI(Zone 5a)

We have had all that weird stuff here also ! Hubby is keeping a snow board for the weather service, between 4 and 5 we had one and a half inches of snow. on top of the 4 inches already on the ground from last night andthis morning. but they say Rogers City had a foot in 5 hrs. today. Hubby just fill ed the outside wood furnace so we are good till about 9 tomorrow morning. Hope everyone stays safe and warm during this storm. Aleta

Lincoln Park, MI(Zone 5a)

We're getting rain and winds,no snow yet..I hope everyones tucked in for the night, stay safe and off the roads..

Loretta...

Melvindale, MI(Zone 5a)

Very heavy rain and wind here. Rained so hard that we got some water in our basement. Never had that happen in winter before.

AuGres, MI(Zone 5b)

We lost our power last night but I have a standby generator that kicked right on. Then we had a brown out and the generator shut off. Then the power went out again and the generator kicked back on. This morning the power was restored. My son who is in AuGres also is still without power. He came over last night for our old two generators and took them home with him.

Sun is out and melting the ice off of everything. Not sure what else is in store. I was going to go to Standish today but think I'll just hunker down here for the day instead.

Glennie, MI(Zone 5a)

We were on the lucky side it quit snowing about 9;30 last night . We ended up with only about 5 inches.
Sun is out and it is a beautiful day here . The temp is 25.9 out in the shade, and my greenhouse is reading 80, and really no wind to speak of. Hubby is plowing the snow in the driveway, and I am finally getting some work done in the house. Aleta

AuGres, MI(Zone 5b)

It's six below zero here in Au Gres this morning. That is really cold!! I had 4 huge blue jays sitting on my patio table on my deck this morning. Their feathers were all fluffed out as they patiently awaited their breakfast. I gave them some extra bread and seed. I keep a heated water bowl out for them too. They are spoiled rotten. The sun is shining though so it doesn't seem that bad.

I am a bit worried about my new clematis and other plants making it through this mess. They are all coated in ice and now with sub zero temperatures I wonder if they'll make it.

I'm hoping for an early spring this year. Enough already of this weather. :)

Brenda

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

Minus 17 wind chill here- three on the thermometer. Brrrr. Sun is shining so it seems a bit better. I've been chasing the sun around the family room trying to put sun loving plants in the rays for a bit.

Even tho Feb is the shortest month on the calendar, it is the longestttttt month of the year for me....I awaiting May

Au Gres, MI(Zone 5a)

Hi everyone......We lucked out....we still have our power, however we had our generators all ready and full of gas....flash lights in place. I know the entire town of Tawas City was without power. The radio station was without power....No gas stations were open, banks were closed, it was literally dead....strange sight to see. Its still very cold out but at least the sun is shinning....

Brenda.....I think your plants will be ok....we have had colder weather up here for longer periods of time and everything seem to be ok.....I know this is your first winter up here....

Deann

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

Well not so nice here-power went off at 1.25am friday came back on today about 10:30am. All afternoon friday I bailed out the sump pump and finally around 3pm we got a small generator to run the pump and then my DH rig the furnace up. We sent the 2 lil guys to their older brothers house where there was heat and power(tv) We had played truth or dare and some other games to keep them busy. They did go outside and play a little but it was so cold and windy and you cant warm up much in the house. The house stayed around 60 all day without any heat! I worked up quite a sweat hauling water from the sump pump. I boiled some water on the sideburner of the gas grill and had coffee and ramen noodles!!!
We stuck all the schwans ice cream outside in the snow for the night
We did FRY one tv when the generator had a power surge! grrrrrrrrrrrr
We didnt run the generator during the night and the temps got down to 58 in the house overnight and DH started the furnace before i got out of bed. We went to breakfast and when we got home we had power. Everything is ICE and just beautiful-magical looking.
We had quite the weather-rain and thunder and lightning and freezing rain and then the winds were up to 40mph. What a winter mess I cant wait for SPRING!!!

glad to have power again!!!

Dori - glad your power is back - wouldn't it be awful if it lasted for a long time!! We get used to our comforts!! My 85 yr old aunt/uncle have been withoutpower for three days. They have a generator, but I still worry about them. But they are stubborn and won't take help from anyone!!

Does your generator do your whole house. Would you mind telling me how big (generator) is. We are in the market for one, but we're unsure what size would be best. Pull start/ button start(that's what I vote for)

Our house was down to 58 this morning too - mightly chilly. DH cranks the furnace down very low and we used mostly wood for heat. (I make use of the heating pad!!)

I want to close my eyes and wake up to 70's (outside that is!)

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

Sue we had to borrow the one we used!! nites without power was long enough for us!
My Dh has a 10,000 watter out in the shop-that he needs to get running(always late)
The one we had was 2200watts so we would run one thing at a time(2 at the most)

DH said it would take about 10,000-15,000watts to power a whole house.
I would vote electric start

i thinki there is about 10,000 people as of last night still without power- i feel for em!!

wake up to 70degrees-oh ya thats my dream too!

AuGres, MI(Zone 5b)

Sue,

We have a stand by generator. I love it. It runs on propane and it comes on all by itself when the sensor notes the power is out. We bought it at Home Depot and had a local electrical contractor install it for us. It is a Generac Guardian generator and here is a link that explains it. I think we paid around $2600 for ours and then another $450 to have the electrical hooked up to it. My son hooked up the gas line. I hope this link works for you.

http://www.homedepot.com/prel80/HDUS/EN_US/jsearch/product.jsp?pn=168827

It runs practically everything in our small house. It runs the furnace, sump pump, well pump and the microwave and some lights in every room in the house. I can even run the computer and television. It comes on by itself once a week to test itself and circulate the oil through the motor.

My husband is an over the road trucker so he's not here except on weekends. I have my 90 year old mother living with us so I have to have heat, water, lights etc. It sure takes a worry off my mind as it seems the power goes out around here fairly often.

Hope this helps.

Brenda

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

Hey - thanks both of you for the generator help. DH thinks a pull start one would be fine- NOT - do you know how many pull things we have that I can't get going. Besides, he thinks he is going to be young and strong for a long time (as he rubs his aching arm LOL)

DH keeps checking the paper for a used one....grrr I want one now!! Oh well, our heat is working, he will get on the ball once our electricity goes go out - he moves faster during stress times!!

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

When I bailed the sump pump i hurt my back again. It the siotic(sp)nerve that goes from the tailbone all the way down my leg to my toes. I have muscle relaxers but they just knock me out and when i wake im still in pain-getting older is NO fun

The sun is out and heating my GH but they say that will change by afternoon and the snow will arrive-I sure hope that march brings spring and warmth. This has been a very mild winter for us so im not complaining, just ready to garden!!!
Myself I hope summer is a carbon copy of last yrs and HOT and sunny. I got rain just when i needed it and just enough each time!

Im going to see if this post since they are having technical difficulties here on the site today then im going to head to the GH while the sun is shinning

hugz to all

We didn`t get the snow that the weatherman was saying we only got an inch instead of 3 to 8 ,but it sure is windy.
Going to the home and garden show in Oscoda and then to get my hair done.
We have a gas generator.,we have a lot of power outages here,so it gets used quite often.
I know all about pain I have fribromalgia, and a diabetic, with all the problems that go with that , but I do manage to get out and garden. I have a DH who does all the heavy lifting and all the digging , I just have to start the seed and he helps me plant them. Aleta

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

We didnt get one flake here. But the winds are strong and cold.
They say March will come in like a lion-so that must mean it will only get better with each passing day-RIGHT?

yesterday i was in the gh very early and stayed till late afternoon it was 96 in there and i didnt open it becuz I knew the clouds were on the way-so i sweat and luved it!! lol
I oiled up my handles on my garden tools and did some more painting and siliconing!
Im going to head out there in a lil while and find something else to work on.

I want to get some seed starting mix for my tomatoes get them started inside and then move to the GH soon-spring is coming and im itching to get started!

My daylily seedlings are doing good, if i could just keep my Mainecoon out of them. He broke a statue today that i had in front of them to block him from getting them!! grrrrrr

I hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Hi gang!

It is cold and sunny and windy here too. DH sent away to Heartland USA for a complete weather center. He is tired of relying on the forecasters inexpert advice. He is almost up on the roof, with the wind speed vane thing and the direction thing, there is a sensor
for barometric pressure and humidity, and the inside receiver tracks rainfall amounts that this little box up on the roof collects from the rain, and it drips through. I told DH to talk into the windvane and see how much hot air he had. 1.7mph. HA!!!

I have DH building me a light starting seed thing with two four foot florescent tubes boxes. I will start my 10 week ahead of time seeds this week. That might be some of the tomatos and the peppers and watermelons.

My beautiful beautiful asparagus we saved seed from are up. they are soooooo cute!! Little eeeeny beeeeny teeeeeny weeeeeeny little stalks. going to take a picture to share.

Deanne: Here is a picture of our horses for you.

I miss Pizza. I miss Bialeys. Kosher Hot dogs, nathans french fries. I miss Chock full of nuts doughnuts., nyc street vendors hot dogs, and pretzels. I miss great, fresh, seafood. lobsters. jimmys backyard. jolly fisherman. roosevelt field the way it used to be. going down to beach number 9 on jones beach , i think its closed now due to erosion? the cool soft sand when the sun went down and the smell of the ocean. I miss the hot sun and the wind blowing over you when you lie down on the beach. fishing in the ocean for flounders, when they used to be there. i miss the foghorns and the bells in the sound. sand on the sidewalks on the north shore. little streets all over the shoreline. Square knishes with potato filling. hot,
with salt and mustard. giant pastrami on soft seedy rye with mustard from any deli. Italian ices!!!!!!! oh my god. theres no italian ice here. wahhhhhhhhhhh. in the white pleated squeezy cups. lemon, choclate, grape, coconut, cherry, strawberry, italian pastry shops, jewish bakeries, HARD ROLLS, esp. with an egg and bacon in the morning. Coffee. Restaurants where I don't get sick at. Fresh vegetables at the supermarket. Whole milk mozzerella for $2.99 a pound. Not $7.00 a pound like here....ripoff!!

On the other hand, I am here, and boy, do I have a list thats tooo long to list.... of the fabulosities and favorities of me here. I am just so glad to be accepted. You can't believe. Even my kids who some stayed in NY are creepy! LOL.

Dori! This morning we were driving down the road to hastings from Freeport and thats exactly what i said to DH "march comes in like a lion". I still cannot smell any spring.

No Robins.
Nothing different here, yet. big woodpeckers at my special mixture of suet at the feeders. I make my own! Birds go nuts. Fresh boiled beef fat, boiled for like two days to clarify it. Tons of peanut butter. Good fresh seeds, hulled and not hulled. tons of dried mi blueberries, strawberries, cherries, raisins, all chopped up and mixed in to it and then spread out on a cookie sheet and let to dry and cool outside and then cut up and I keep it in the fridgie in blocks. Yummy!!! I will be having FAT birds.

We are getting the bird houses ready with new wire to hang them.
so I guess, we are slowly getting ready for the spring time too!

Our new woodstove is sure doing a super job. what a great thing.
I can't believe I wasted 75% of my life paying for heat when it was
all around me for free. God.!How stupid can I have been? Actually,
it was circumstances, not my stupidity.

Gotta go help DH put up the weather station. I need to be his eyes
on the ground he said. If anyone needs a weather forcast, just
ask!

sheri
