LOL..no worries..I am a typo queen also :)
wow you have a few....

Grenthumbs do you have any opyimaras ?
Welcome to the African violet fourm. Do you have many African violets ?
Sadly, I have one unknown little friend that I haven't killed yet, I love them so but I have little twerps who don't leave them alone, and any safe place I would have put them is to cold or to dark. I have tons of STURDY house plants and things that aren't picky about drafty windows, or a few leaves being ripped off, my time to shine is outside in my gardens.
I'm getting a digital camera for my birthday I'll be able to share with you VERY soon.
: )
Dena
I have a couple of "lookalikes" that may or may not be Optimaras. I also have a young plant of 'Mississippi', which I think is an Optimara, from nannanavarro.
Here's a recent thread chatting about the Optimaras available for purchase at a particular site.... http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/566888/
Welcome to DG, Grenthumbs! I've had such a blast here this past year... I hope you'll love it too! The AV forum has really started hopping the last few months, so if you are (or are becoming) addicted to them, you're in the right place! ;-)
Oh so your children get your plants ? We have plant Mom's in the forum could give you some ideas how to keep your plants safe :))
Oh hun..I have over 100 violets floating around here..LOL so YUP and addict!
Hey, Dena... Did you know that there are *trailing* african violets? They could be hung next to a window, where they'd get the bright, indirect light they love and less of a draft.... You could also try some plants on top of a dresser, out of reach, and add a florescent light fixture above them.... I have a couple of plant shelves with lights downstairs, and I just turn the lights on during the day when they won't created lots of distracting glare.
It looks like I'll have plenty of AV plantlets to send out for spring trades... maybe we can swap for some sunny perennials! AVs have become my winter indoor gardening passion, but I keep pretty busy outside the rest of the year, LOL.
I'm looking forward to seeing photos taken with your new digicam!
SOMEDAY!!! I'll be able to have STUFF, I have a twelve year old daughter who likes my plants and is always offering to help me with them, then I have a four year old boy and a two year old boy, they love my plants too, too much. I can't wait for the day I can put something pretty on my coffee table. I know that day will come... so until then I like to see what everyone else has and I do alot of research on AVs when the time comes I'll be all read up on them.
the first thing I'm gonna do is take a lovely shot of my "little friend" and ask you guys what the heck it is! : ) be on the look out....
I would take a picture of my optimaras but they are all mixed in with everyone else :)
Would love to see your plant but we are unlikely to be able to tell you who she is!
There are thousands of violet varieties out there now :)
Welcome Greenthumbs...it's good to have you on board. There is a whole crew of people here that are ready, willing, and able to help with any and all questions concerning african violets. Come back often.
Deb
CL, my mom says I need a twelve step program because I have so many plants. Of course she can't talk I learned it from her.
I'm not happy unless my fingernails and my feet are dirty.
Critter, I see you all over DG, I get a kick out of you, I love reading what you have to say and share alot of the same thoughts and feelings. I would love to share, and or trade with you, I just have to be careful not to take in to many " NEW FRIENDS" as we lack the space for them, how ever, I'll let you know when I get my green house....lol
at some point I'll get organized with a DG list of stuff I have and would be happy to trade. These things take time...
Welcome Grenthumbs. I have Mississippi, Ever Special, Rhapsody Rose, Rose Quartz, Little Cherokee, and Little Omaha. I also have Tradition and Modesty from the Victorian Series. I have several others that I know are Optimara but, alas, they have no names.
Jill trailing African Violets hanging great Idea :))
How about this Dena about hanging pots of African Violets :)) Or up high on a dressor. I have a shelf over my kitchen sick hubby made . It is half way up the window no kid could reach.
PlantMom of three little ones could give you more hints ! I have three children but they are all married now and grew up way to fast.

Sorry Dena about this double triple posting DG is messed up and my typing and spelling is horrible.
Wish they had Spell check here :))
I sure we can think of ways you can have some African violets and they will be safe.

When my stepmom was about your daughter's age, she looked at her mom's violets and decided to help her clean them.........scrubbed them with a toothbrush. : ) they died. : (
my optimaras are on another thread about a week ago i think....
Thanks Laurie does it take much space up in your computor ? I have a yahoo bar up there and don't even know how it got there. lol
I do have most of the Space baby Everfloris line and some of the Little series. A few states here and there I enjoy giving them to people that live in that State !

Here's the great feature. Let's say I go to Violet Gallery web site and all I want to do is look up plants with Girl Foliage. I go to the page I want (in this case the catalog page for mini's) and type girl foliage (dont hit the return key, or it will do a google search **Next post I'll show that)
Once you type your search words, then click the 'highlighter pen' further over to the right in the tool bar.
and the results are that it will highlight all the key words in the page for you, saves time reading each listing to look for plants that have girl folage.

Hey guys, I just got Birthdayed!!!
My kids made me a cake, I got a glass humming bird feeder, a big ol garden cart and my new digital camera is on its way! Best of all I got a coffee in bed this morning. How sweet is that?!?!
I have lived in RI nearly my entire life with the exception of my fifteenth year, we lived in Port Charlotte Fl. That was a weird year for me, we got bathingsuits for Christmas... NOT NORMAL! And I had a hard time wrapping my brain around Christmas lights on palm trees, although it was pretty.
I am and always will be a New England girl I guess.
AS the mother of 3 kids who have survived to teenage-hood and beyond, and the grandmother of a very curious and "helpful" 3 yr/old, I have a suggestion for you Grenthumbs, tell them you will have to break their fingers if they touch! LOL
Sometimes you are at the mercy of your kids until they get to another phase. It's just the way things are. I can't do a bit of gardening when my grandson is with me, he loves to dig and invariably digs up plants that I really hoped would put down roots.
April, I have tried the broken finger threat, in fact, I used it this morning, I found my 2 yr old breaking off parts of my split rock plant!!! I told him I'd ring his bloody neck if he did it again...
on the other hand, out in the yard, I have made the boys a garden of their own, they each get to plant a tomato plant, beans and what ever flower seeds I have left over they get to choose a few, they love it and they don;t bother my gardens, of course their garden is always alittle weedy, and they hardly ever let the tomatoes turn green but they love it just the same, I'll make gardeners out of them, just you wait and see.
I tried the same aproach with the house plants, didn't work.
Junglebob, my AV looks like your dali, the leaves are the same but the booms on mine are ruffled and its purple, but only on the very edges of each pettal.
oh and the blooms are big. The biggest one on there now is just
under 1 3/4" I think thats big, I could be mistaken.
I guess I was lucky My three kids growing up were perfect angels . lol Well I never put breakables up they never touch plants or things they were not supose to.
Really I was lucky and the first two both boys were only 21 months apart. My little girl was always an angel . And I made it to be a Grandma too !
Thanks Laurie . I will try it ! How did you post pictures of that your so smart.
I loved growing up in New England. Both my sons were born in Provindence RI. My daughter in New London Conn. I've lived in Maine wonderful God's Country ! But now in Florida I don't miss the snow !
Sometimes I get alittle green with envy, I would love to have the longer growing season but I think I would go nutty so far from my sisters and their kids oh, and can't forget my mom, shes *WICKED* COOL!
: )
I love my kids there are so great but they r getting big to fast and even though I want to have my STUFF I would rather enjoy my babies, I know they will get past the seek and destoy stage....eventually...
then I'll be sure to put one of Critters lovelies on my coffee table!!!
I grew up in Burrillville RI and just moved away when I Moved to FL 10 yrs ago!
we're glad Lorry moved here * *
