Anyone use teepee trellis for their MG's?

Phoenix, AZ

I'm getting ready to start a bunch of seeds (thank you e-bay) I saw 8ft red wood 2x2's @ Home depot. I thought they might make an interesting trellis in the shape of a teepee. Anyone do this? Any down side? I know some vines would be to heavy. Maybe a different color growing up each leg?

What types of MGs are you going to grow? They probably would be ok on the wood, I use bamboo canes because it is much less expensive for the same effect.

The only bamboo I've seen is kinda short, where do you get yours?

Garden Centers often carry longer canes. You can order curved ones that you can overlap to make a kind of obelisk too. I bought some from a mail order catalog recently, which is an option if you don't mind paying a shipping fee. Do you have large store like a Home Depot-like place? They often have these materials come spring time, so if you can wait you might save some $$$ on shipping. I had good luck with wire tomato cages for container grown MGs.

Do You stack the Tomato cages? I've only seen short ones?

I used ones that were about 3-4 feet tall, not including the feet that go in the ground.

I can't remember the actual sizes, but the last time I bought a tomato cage, they had 3 different sizes. I bought one that was about 4 feet and there was one smaller and one bigger.

FN. Just yesterday I saw the long canes at Home Depot. They were at least 6 feet. Funny, I was looking for 1/2 x 1/2 redwood to make a trellis for the same reason. Didn't see any and I refuse to pay their price for a ready made trellis.

So, just how tall does a trellis need to be for MGs, anyway? Can you get by with just a 4 footer? Does the trellis size matter if you are planting multiple vines in the same location or pot?

You can wind the leading end of the vine back into the trellis, or prune it at the actively growing end when it gets to the top of the trellis...it will then grow out laterally from secondary shoots coming off of leaf nodes. I would not put more than 2 vines on one trellis.
